Chapter 8 - The Marriage Account

The account had been opened seven years earlier.

Chloe’s name appeared beside Kyle’s, but she had never signed the application.

Kyle had used a digital copy of her driver’s license and an electronic signature.

Small amounts moved through the account at first.

Five hundred dollars.

Then two thousand.

Then ten thousand.

Because Chloe never received statements, she did not notice.

Over time, the account became a hidden channel for money taken from Bennett Shore Development.

Some payments covered legitimate business emergencies.

Others paid Susan’s mortgage, Heather’s credit card debt, luxury vacations, and Kyle’s private investment losses.

Chloe looked at the records until the numbers blurred.

“How much?” she asked.

Marissa calculated the transfers.

“In seven years, approximately eight hundred thousand dollars passed through this account.”

Susan stopped crying.

Her expression became defensive.

“My son helped his family.”

“With stolen money,” Chloe said.

“Kyle earned that money.”

“It belonged to homebuyers.”

Heather folded her arms.

“You benefited from him too. Look at this house.”

Chloe turned toward her.

“This house was purchased by my mother’s trust before Kyle and I married.”

Heather’s face shifted.

Kyle had told his family he owned the lake house.

He had also told them Chloe’s income came largely from his business.

The truth was the opposite.

Chloe’s career in corporate compliance had paid most household expenses during the years when Kyle’s developments struggled.

She had never mentioned it because marriage was not supposed to be a competition.

Kyle had used her silence to rewrite their lives.

He made himself the provider.

He described Chloe as dependent.

He told Susan and Heather that everything around them existed because of him.

The deputies could not conduct a full financial search without warrants, but Marissa preserved the statements and contacted the state financial crimes unit.

Kyle walked toward the door.

“I’m leaving.”

One deputy told him he was free to go unless formally detained.

But before Kyle reached the threshold, Norman spoke.

“Where are my truck keys?”

Heather removed them from her pocket.

She dropped them onto the table.

Norman stared at her.

“You watched me search for those.”

“You were upset.”

“You knew I wanted to leave.”

Susan interrupted.

“We were protecting you until Kyle returned.”

Norman looked at the dirty cloth still lying on the floor.

“No. You were keeping me here until my land became yours.”

Kyle opened the front door.

Chloe’s voice stopped him.

“Do you know why my trip ended early?”

He looked back.

“The company we were auditing confessed before the final interview.”

Chloe lifted the forged documents.

“I know exactly what financial fraud looks like when the people behind it begin turning on each other.”

👉 Kyle left believing his mother and sister would remain loyal, but Chloe had already seen fear dividing all three of them.
