Chapter 6 - The Company Behind Susan’s Address

The shell company was called Prairie Horizon Holdings.

It had no employees.

No office.

No business history.

Its registered mailing address was Susan’s townhouse in Savannah.

Heather’s name appeared as the company secretary.

Susan stared at Marissa’s screen.

“I have never heard of it.”

Marissa opened the state registration.

“Your electronic signature is here.”

“Anyone could have entered my name.”

Heather stepped in.

“Mom doesn’t understand business filings.”

“Then perhaps you do,” Chloe said.

Heather looked toward Kyle.

That single glance was enough.

Kyle moved closer to the deputies.

“This is a private family dispute. No money moved. No crime was completed.”

Marissa answered before Chloe could.

“Forgery and attempted financial exploitation do not become legal because the wire was stopped.”

Kyle’s voice sharpened.

“You’re her real estate attorney, not a prosecutor.”

“No. But I know who to call.”

Marissa explained the structure.

The private lender would issue three million dollars against the Nebraska farm.

Most of that money would replace the missing escrow funds before Monday’s audit.

Kyle’s company had no realistic way to repay the loan in ninety days.

When the loan defaulted, the lender would seize the farm.

Prairie Horizon Holdings would then purchase it through a prearranged agreement.

Norman’s land would pass into a company connected to Susan and Heather.

Norman stared at Kyle.

“You were going to make me lose the farm and then buy it yourselves?”

Kyle’s face remained still.

“That is speculation.”

“Why my farm?”

“Because it has value.”

Norman’s voice cracked.

“My father worked that land. My wife is buried there.”

Chloe took his hand.

Kyle looked irritated rather than ashamed.

“The sentimental value does not change the numbers.”

Chloe saw her husband clearly in that moment.

For years, she had mistaken ambition for strength.

She had excused his impatience, his secrecy, and the way he measured every relationship by what it could provide.

But a man who could speak about her mother’s grave as a number had never understood her family at all.

One deputy asked Kyle to surrender his phone.

Kyle refused without a warrant.

Then a notification flashed across his locked screen.

The sender was listed as D. Voss.

The message preview read:

Once we get the land, the energy deal makes all of us rich.

Norman looked at Chloe.

“What energy deal?”

May you like

Kyle’s expression finally showed fear.

👉 The farm was worth far more than Norman knew, and Kyle had discovered the secret months before deceiving him.
