Chapter 10 - The Spill Was Not an Accident
Norman had arrived at the lake house on Wednesday night.
For the first day, Susan treated him kindly.
She made coffee.
Heather asked about the farm.
Kyle repeatedly assured him Chloe was safe but unreachable.
After the documents were signed Thursday morning, the kindness ended.
Kyle left for meetings.
Susan moved Norman’s suitcase into a small downstairs storage room instead of the guest suite.
Heather took his phone.
When Norman asked to call Marissa, Susan reminded him that investigators were supposedly watching the family.
By Friday afternoon, Norman no longer believed them.
He found his truck keys missing.
He packed his bag and decided to walk to the main road.
Before leaving, he entered the kitchen to collect food for the drive home.
Heather followed him.
“She said old people shouldn’t travel alone,” Norman told Chloe.
“What happened next?”
“She pulled the grocery bag from my hand.”
The glass jar shattered.
Eggs and noodles spread across the floor.
Susan entered and told him he would clean it before going anywhere.
Norman refused.
Heather stood between him and the door.
Susan pointed at the floor.
“If you expect Kyle to save your daughter, you will show his family some respect.”
Norman knelt because he was afraid refusing might somehow hurt Chloe.
Heather began recording him on her phone.
Chloe’s face went cold.
“She recorded it?”
Norman nodded.
“She said no one would believe me if I claimed they mistreated me.”
Chloe called the deputy who had taken their statements.
Heather had said Norman dropped the groceries because his hands were unsteady.
She had not mentioned making a video.
The deputy contacted her and instructed her not to delete anything.
Heather insisted there was no recording.
But cloud backups often preserved deleted files.
Marissa suggested another possibility.
“If Kyle planned to challenge Norman’s competence as trustee, video of him kneeling among broken food could be edited to make him appear confused or incapable.”
The financial scheme suddenly widened.
Kyle did not merely need Norman’s signature.
He needed a way to prevent Norman from undoing it.
A court petition alleging cognitive decline could temporarily remove Norman as trustee.
Then Kyle could argue that Chloe, as his wife, had authorized him to act.
The humiliation was not only cruelty.
