Chapter 14 - When Loyalty Broke

Heather was the first to cooperate.

She gave investigators access to her messages, cloud files, and Prairie Horizon documents.

She claimed Kyle promised her twenty percent of the company in exchange for handling the notary and keeping Norman at the lake house.

She identified Melissa Crane as the notary.

Melissa had not witnessed Chloe sign anything.

Kyle gave her a scanned image of Chloe’s signature and paid her five thousand dollars to certify the document.

Melissa surrendered the payment records.

She also revealed that Susan had been present when the forged authorization was prepared.

Susan denied it until investigators showed her photographs from the lake house security system.

Then she blamed Kyle.

Kyle blamed Daniel.

Daniel blamed everyone.

The conspiracy collapsed because none of them were willing to accept the punishment alone.

Search warrants uncovered draft property transfers, secret accounts, and emails discussing the fourteen-million-dollar energy offer.

Investigators also found a spreadsheet titled FAMILY DISTRIBUTION.

It listed projected profits after Norman’s farm was taken.

Kyle: $8,200,000.

Daniel: $2,400,000.

Susan: $1,000,000.

Heather: $1,000,000.

Miscellaneous fees: $400,000.

Norman’s name appeared at the bottom.

Expected settlement: $75,000.

After losing land worth nearly fourteen million dollars, Kyle planned to offer Norman seventy-five thousand dollars and call it assistance.

Chloe read the figure in silence.

Her father had once sold his truck to pay her first year of college tuition.

He had slept in a hospital chair for twelve nights while her mother was dying.

Kyle valued his entire life at less than the price of the champagne served at one of his investor parties.

The energy company learned of the fraud and contacted Marissa directly.

It remained interested in negotiating with Norman.

This time, the offer would go to the rightful owner.

But Norman was no longer sure he wanted any agreement.

“The farm is home,” he said.

“No one will force you to sell,” Chloe assured him.

Marissa agreed.

The loan had been canceled.

The forged authorizations had no legal effect.

The trust remained protected.

Yet another question remained.

Kyle’s company still owed millions to homebuyers whose deposits had disappeared.

Chloe knew she was not responsible for his crimes.

But many innocent families could lose their savings.

She began considering a decision Kyle would never have understood.

👉 Chloe had saved Norman’s farm, but she now had to choose whether to protect the strangers Kyle had robbed.
