Chapter 15 - The People Behind the Missing Money
Chloe met with twelve families who had placed deposits on units in Kyle’s unfinished condominium project.
A young couple had postponed their wedding to save for the apartment.
A retired teacher had invested the proceeds from her late husband’s life insurance.
One family had sold their accessible home because Kyle promised their new unit would be ready before their disabled son began school.
They were not wealthy investors.
They were ordinary people who believed the money in escrow was protected.
Kyle had taken that protection from them.
Chloe’s divorce attorney warned her not to use personal assets to repair her husband’s crimes.
“You are not morally responsible for rescuing everyone he harmed.”
“I know.”
“Then why are you considering it?”
“Because I know what it feels like to discover someone used your trust as a weapon.”
Chloe did not pay Kyle’s debts.
Instead, she worked with the court-appointed receiver to preserve Bennett Shore Development’s remaining legitimate assets.
The lakefront project could still be completed if a new developer purchased it.
Chloe used her compliance experience to find a reputable firm willing to take over construction.
She waived any marital claim she might have had to Kyle’s remaining business interest, allowing that value to go directly into restitution.
Norman offered to sell part of his farm.
Chloe refused.
“You already risked everything because of me.”
“I risked it because I believed a lie.”
“And now you know the truth.”
The energy company proposed a different arrangement.
Norman could keep ownership of the farm while granting a limited easement along its northern boundary.
The agreement would pay him enough to secure his future, restore the farmhouse, and establish a restitution fund without surrendering the land.
Norman agreed only after independent appraisers and Marissa reviewed every page.
“No more signing because someone says there isn’t time,” he said.
Chloe smiled.
“That sounds like my father.”
The first restitution payments reached the affected families three months later.
It did not erase what Kyle had done.
But it prevented several people from losing everything.
Meanwhile, prosecutors filed charges against Kyle, Daniel, Susan, Heather, and Melissa.
Kyle faced the most serious counts.
His attorney requested that Chloe write a letter asking for leniency.
