Chapter 17 - The House by the Lake

The divorce became final two months after Kyle’s sentencing.

He received no ownership interest in the lakeside house.

The property had always belonged to the Mercer Family Trust.

Susan had lived there for months believing her son owned it.

Heather had hosted parties there and described it online as “the Bennett family retreat.”

Kyle had encouraged the lie because it made him appear wealthier than he was.

Chloe could have remained in the house.

Instead, every room reminded her of something she no longer wanted.

The office where Kyle copied her signature.

The kitchen where Susan controlled Norman’s phone.

The living room floor where her father had been forced to kneel.

Norman walked through the empty house with her one last time.

“You don’t have to sell because of me.”

“I’m not selling because of you.”

“Then why?”

“Because I don’t want my future built inside Kyle’s lie.”

Chloe sold the property.

Part of the proceeds went to the victims’ restitution program.

Another portion funded legal services for older adults facing financial abuse by relatives.

Chloe kept enough to purchase a smaller home near Norman’s farm in Nebraska.

Susan heard about the sale while serving her sentence.

Through an attorney, she demanded several pieces of furniture she claimed Kyle had bought.

Receipts showed Chloe had purchased them.

Her request was denied.

Heather’s social media pages disappeared.

The people who once admired her lakefront photographs learned the home had never belonged to her family.

The punishment was not merely losing luxury.

It was losing the illusion they had built at Norman’s expense.

Before the sale closed, Chloe returned to the living room alone.

The floor was spotless.

But she could still see her father’s shaking hands around the dirty cloth.

She knelt in the same place.

Not from defeat.

From memory.

Norman entered quietly and found her there.

He lowered himself beside her with difficulty.

“You told me to get up,” he said.

Chloe took his hand.

“And you did.”

“No. We did.”

Together, they stood.

Then they walked out of the house without looking back.

👉 The house was finally behind them, but healing waited on the Nebraska land Kyle had nearly stolen.
