Chapter 1 - The Man on His Knees
Norman Mercer was on his knees when his daughter came home.
Broken eggs, red sauce, noodles, and shattered glass covered the polished floor of the bright lakeside living room.
At seventy-one, Norman’s hands were no longer steady. His fingers shook around a filthy dishcloth as he tried to gather the food without cutting himself.
Susan Bennett stood in the doorway with her arms crossed.
“Make him scrub it.”
Her daughter Heather sat on the sofa, eating grapes as though Norman’s humiliation were part of the afternoon entertainment.
“Maybe he’ll learn not to touch things that don’t belong to him,” Heather said.
Neither woman noticed the suitcase near the front door.
Neither saw Chloe standing beside it.
She had arrived twelve hours earlier than expected after an overseas business trip. Her husband, Kyle, believed she was still on a plane from Frankfurt.
Chloe stared at her father’s bent back.
The man who had worked through Nebraska winters to raise her after her mother died was kneeling in her living room while her husband’s family watched him clean their mess.
“Dad, get up.”
Heather stopped chewing.
Susan’s arms dropped.
Norman looked over his shoulder. Terror crossed his face before relief did.
“Chloe?”
She rushed toward him.
Norman tried to stand, but his knee buckled. Chloe caught him beneath the arms and felt how badly he was trembling.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered. “I didn’t mean to cause trouble.”
“You didn’t cause this.”
Susan recovered first.
“He dropped the groceries. We were only asking him to clean up.”
Heather swallowed her grape.
“He refused to listen.”
Chloe turned slowly.
“Why is my father here?”
Susan’s face tightened.
“You should ask your husband.”
Norman reached into his jacket and pulled out a crumpled document.
“Kyle said you were detained.”
Chloe took the paper.
The top line read NOTARIZED AUTHORIZATION.
Below it was Norman’s signature.
Her eyes moved lower.
The document gave Kyle Bennett authority over hundreds of acres of Mercer farmland in Nebraska.
Attached to it was a reference to a three-million-dollar secured loan.
Chloe’s breathing stopped.
“I never asked for this.”
Norman went pale.
“But Kyle said the money was for you.”
A phone on the coffee table suddenly vibrated.
Heather reached for it.
Chloe got there first.
A message from Kyle glowed across the screen.
Did the old man sign?
Chloe looked at Susan.
Then at Heather.
The amusement had vanished from both women’s faces.
Chloe stepped in front of her father.

“Now we wait for Kyle.”
👉 Before Kyle returned, Chloe had one chance to stop three million dollars from disappearing—and the wire was already being processed.
