Chapter 11 - The Video They Couldn’t Delete
The financial crimes unit obtained an emergency preservation order for Heather’s cloud account.
By the following afternoon, investigators recovered the deleted recording.
The video began before the groceries fell.
Heather’s hand was visible grabbing the bag.
Norman told her to let go.
She jerked it harder.
The food crashed onto the floor.
Susan entered and saw exactly what had happened.
She did not ask whether Norman was hurt.
She said, “Make him scrub it.”
Heather laughed.
Then came the most damaging exchange.
“Should I keep recording?” Heather asked.
Susan answered, “Kyle said we need proof the old man can’t take care of himself.”
Norman’s voice could be heard from the floor.
“I know what you’re doing.”
Heather replied, “Then sign whatever else Kyle brings, and maybe we’ll let you go home.”
The recording continued until Chloe entered.
It captured her suitcase beside the door.
Her shock.
Her order for Norman to stand.
And Heather’s instant attempt to blame him.
The video meant to destroy Norman’s credibility became clear evidence of coercion, unlawful restraint, and conspiracy.
Heather called Chloe repeatedly after investigators confronted her.
Chloe did not answer.
Then Heather sent a message.
Kyle planned everything. Mom and I didn’t know about the forged signature. I’ll tell you what he did if you help me.
Chloe forwarded the message to Marissa.
She did not negotiate.
Heather had watched an elderly man kneel in broken glass while eating grapes.
Fear of consequences did not transform her into an innocent witness.
Susan also began changing her story.
She claimed Kyle told her Norman had already agreed to sell the farm.
She said she believed the video was intended to document a medical concern.
But investigators found messages showing Susan had discussed the energy company’s offer before Norman arrived.
One message to Kyle read:
After the old man loses the farm, make sure Chloe never finds out what it was really worth.
Norman read the message only once.
Then he handed the phone back.
“I used to wonder what I had done to make them hate me.”
Chloe took his hand.
“They didn’t hate you. They simply valued money more than your humanity.”
Norman looked toward the clean floor.
“I’m not sure that feels better.”
It did not.
But the evidence was becoming impossible to deny.
Then investigators recovered another message from Kyle.
It had been sent to someone named Daniel Voss.
