Chapter 16 - The Courtroom Floor
Nine months after Chloe found her father kneeling, Kyle entered a courtroom in handcuffs.
He pleaded guilty to wire fraud, forgery, conspiracy, misuse of escrow funds, and attempted financial exploitation of an elderly person.
Daniel Voss also pleaded guilty after federal investigators connected him to several predatory loan schemes.
Melissa lost her notary commission and admitted falsely certifying Chloe’s signature.
Heather accepted responsibility for coercing Norman, destroying evidence, and participating in the fraudulent company.
Susan held out longer.
Even at sentencing, she insisted she had only trusted her son.
The prosecutor played Heather’s recording.
Susan’s voice filled the courtroom.
Make him scrub it.
Then came the second line.
Kyle said we need proof the old man can’t take care of himself.
Susan lowered her head.
The judge addressed her directly.
“You did not merely stand beside a financial crime. You helped strip an older man of dignity so his humiliation could be used as evidence against him.”
Susan received a custodial sentence followed by supervised release.
Heather received a shorter sentence because of her cooperation, but the court rejected her request for probation alone.
Melissa and Daniel were also sentenced.
Kyle faced the judge last.
Before the sentence was announced, he turned toward Chloe.
“I loved you.”
Chloe believed there may once have been truth in those words.
But love without respect could become possession.
Love without honesty could become a trap.
“You loved what you thought my family could give you,” she said.
Kyle looked at Norman.
“I never wanted him hurt.”
Norman’s hands rested calmly on his cane.
“You watched your mother and sister break me down because it helped your plan.”
“I wasn’t there.”
“You created the room even when you weren’t standing in it.”
Kyle had no answer.
The judge imposed a lengthy prison sentence and ordered restitution.
Kyle was permanently barred from managing escrow funds or serving as a fiduciary.
When deputies led him away, he looked back once.
Chloe did not move.
Outside the courthouse, Norman took a deep breath.
“You all right, Little Finch?”
The nickname no longer belonged to Kyle’s deception.
It belonged to them again.
Chloe smiled through tears.
