Chapter 9 - THE DAUGHTER THEY USED AS A WITNESS
Audrey met Ellie inside a secured conference room that evening.
The moment the door closed, she ran into her mother’s arms.
Ellie held her without speaking.
Audrey had been ten when Ellie accepted her first long overseas assignment.
She had grown up understanding missed birthdays, delayed calls, and sudden changes in plans.
Graham turned every absence into evidence.
Your mother chooses soldiers over family.
Your mother trusts the Army more than us.
Your mother always has another mission.
Audrey loved both parents.
That made her easy to divide.
“I believed him when he said you were struggling,” Audrey admitted.
“You did not create his lies.”
“I stopped calling because he said my questions upset you.”
Ellie pulled back.
“I thought you were busy with college.”
“He told each of us the other needed space.”
Audrey opened her laptop.
She had saved more than the forged petition.
She had recorded a conversation between Graham and Celeste after refusing to sign the report.
Celeste’s voice came first.
Without Audrey, the judge may hesitate.
Graham answered:
She’ll sign when she understands what happens to her tuition if the trust freezes.
Celeste laughed.
And if she doesn’t?
Then we submit the earlier draft and say Ellie pressured her to withdraw it.
Audrey’s hands shook.
“They were going to forge my signature too.”
Ellie listened to the rest.
Graham described how he would become temporary controller of the family trust.
Celeste would complete the Sentinel North sale.
After the sale, Graham planned to divorce Ellie and claim she had become emotionally dangerous.
Celeste asked whether he felt guilty.
His answer was quiet.
“She left us first.”
Ellie closed her eyes.
Every deployment order had been discussed with Graham.
He had encouraged her promotions when they increased his access to military circles.
Now he had rewritten her service as abandonment.
Audrey handed her mother a small envelope.
Inside was the silver pendant.
Ellie stared at it.
“How did you get this?”
“Celeste dropped her bag when investigators entered. I saw the pendant fall beneath the table.”
Audrey had picked it up before Celeste could recover it.
Ellie turned the star over.
Her name remained engraved on the back.
Beneath it was a second engraving she had never seen.
