Chapter 1 - THE WIFE ALREADY UPSTAIRS

Colonel Ellie Whitlock stopped beneath the gold elevator doors with one hand wrapped around her military bag.

The security guard looked at her uniform, then at the visitor screen.

“I’m sorry, ma’am. Mr. Whitlock’s wife is already upstairs.”

For a moment, Ellie thought she had misunderstood him.

She had returned to Nashville two days earlier than expected after eleven months overseas.

Graham believed she was still thousands of miles away.

His final message remained open on her phone.

MISS YOU, ELLIE. COUNTING THE DAYS.

The elevator opened.

A woman stepped into the marble lobby wearing a black designer dress and carrying a bag worth more than most soldiers earned in a month.

Ellie recognized her.

Celeste Monroe.

Graham’s executive communications director.

Around Celeste’s neck hung a silver star pendant.

Ellie’s silver star pendant.

Graham had given it to her after she became a colonel. Her name and promotion date were engraved on the back.

Celeste’s lips curved into a small smile.

“You must be lost.”

Ellie’s fingers tightened around the strap of her bag.

“That’s my pendant.”

Celeste touched the star.

“This?”

She glanced toward the security guard as though Ellie were an unstable stranger.

“Mr. Whitlock gave it to his wife.”

The guard became pale.

Ellie quietly raised her phone and photographed Celeste, the pendant, and the lobby screen displaying:

MRS. ELEANOR WHITLOCK — EXECUTIVE ACCESS APPROVED.

She opened Whitlock Strategic Systems’ public gallery.

Photograph after photograph showed Graham beside Celeste at veteran galas, military-family fundraisers, and federal contracting dinners.

In every caption, she was called Mrs. Whitlock.

Ellie’s phone rang.

Her twenty-two-year-old daughter, Audrey, appeared on video from a downtown hotel room.

Audrey looked terrified.

“Mom, Dad knows you’re back.”

“How?”

“He told me to report you.”

Ellie’s face changed.

“Report me for what?”

“He wanted me to tell your command you were unstable and making threats.”

The elevator doors began closing behind Celeste.

Ellie sent the photographs, visitor records, and Graham’s messages to a military legal contact.

Two men in dark suits entered the lobby.

Celeste’s smile faded when she recognized them as federal contract investigators.

Ellie stood straighter.

“Tell Graham I’m home.”

Then the security guard looked again at the visitor system.

Celeste had not merely been registered as Graham’s wife.

She had been using Ellie’s full legal name.

👉 Celeste had stolen Ellie’s place beside Graham—but the digital identity upstairs could give her access to far more than a marriage.
