Chapter 11 - THE ENGINEER WHO KEPT A SECOND COPY
The engineer was named Marcus Hale.
He had worked for Whitlock Strategic Systems since its first year.
Ellie remembered him assembling prototypes inside Graham’s rented garage.
Marcus had objected to the Sentinel communications system after repeated battery failures.
During one test, the device overheated inside a transport vehicle.
Celeste ordered the incident classified as operator error.
Marcus refused.
The next morning, his security access was removed.
Graham told employees Marcus had become unstable.
The word appeared again.
Unstable.
It had become the company’s preferred description for anyone who challenged Celeste.
Marcus saved copies of every test report before leaving.
He contacted Ellie after seeing photographs from the lobby confrontation.
“I thought you approved what they did.”
“I didn’t know the project existed in its current form.”
“They used your name in every meeting.”
Marcus showed her an internal presentation.
The first slide displayed Ellie in uniform.

Beneath it, Celeste had written a list of military requirements she invented.
Marcus also possessed an audio recording of Graham discussing the failed tests.
“We disclose those failures, the federal review stops,” Graham said.
Marcus answered, “Then it should stop.”
Celeste interrupted.
“Ellie has accepted the risk.”
Marcus asked to hear that directly from her.
Graham replied:
“My wife is deployed. I speak for her.”
Marcus looked at Ellie.
“I believed him.”
“He was my husband. You had reason to.”
“I still should have contacted you.”
Ellie understood the guilt.
It resembled Audrey’s.
Graham had built his control by making every victim believe they alone had failed.
Marcus then revealed why the board transfer had been accelerated.
A federal safety inspection was scheduled for Tuesday.
If Sentinel North acquired the division before then, Graham planned to claim the failed tests belonged to the previous company.
Whitlock Strategic Systems would receive the sale money.
Sentinel North would inherit the contract.
The documentation would become divided between two legal entities.
Responsibility would disappear inside paperwork.
Marcus handed Ellie a drive containing original test data.
“The system can be fixed,” he said. “But not while they treat questions as betrayal.”
Ellie forwarded the files to federal investigators and the trust board.
The contract approval was suspended that evening.
Graham blamed her publicly.
He released a statement claiming his estranged wife had interfered with a vital defense project for personal reasons.
