Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN IN ELLIE’S CLOTHES
Audrey first noticed the changes during a company holiday dinner.
She returned home from college and found Celeste inside her mother’s bedroom.
Celeste stood before the mirror wearing Ellie’s navy evening coat.
The silver star pendant rested against her throat.
Audrey froze in the doorway.
“What are you doing?”
Celeste looked at her reflection.
“Your father asked me to choose something appropriate for the Veterans Honor Dinner.”
“That belongs to my mom.”
“Your mother hasn’t worn it in years.”
“She’s deployed.”
Celeste removed the coat but kept the pendant.
“Graham said I could borrow it.”
Audrey followed her downstairs.
Graham was pouring champagne.
“Why is she wearing Mom’s necklace?”
“It’s a pendant, not a wedding ring.”
“It has Mom’s name engraved on it.”
Graham placed the bottle down.
“Celeste is representing the company tonight.”
“As your wife?”
“No one said that.”
At the gala, Audrey watched photographers position Graham and Celeste beneath an American flag.
A host introduced them as “Graham Whitlock and his wife, Colonel Ellie Whitlock.”
Audrey expected Celeste to correct him.
She smiled instead.
Graham placed one hand around her waist.
Later, the company posted the photographs online.
The captions identified Celeste only as Mrs. Whitlock.
Audrey called her father.
“You let them think she was Mom.”
“It was a harmless misunderstanding.”
“Then fix the caption.”
“I will.”
He did not.
Over the next several months, Celeste attended more events.
She wore Ellie’s coat, pendant, and even a dress Audrey remembered from her parents’ anniversary.
Employees began calling her Mrs. Whitlock.
Graham stopped correcting them.
When Audrey threatened to tell Ellie, Graham became gentle.
“Your mother is under enormous stress.”
“She deserves to know.”
“She already suspects everyone is against her.”
Audrey frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Graham told her Ellie had become emotionally unstable during deployment.
He claimed military doctors were monitoring her.
He said any confrontation could damage her career.
“If you love your mother,” he said, “you will not give her another reason to lose control.”
Audrey wanted to believe him.
Then Graham handed her a draft statement addressed to Ellie’s commanding officer.
It claimed Ellie had made paranoid accusations about Celeste and threatened to expose classified information.
Audrey refused to sign.
Graham’s expression changed.
“This family needs you to choose the truth.”
Audrey looked at the statement.
