Chapter 5 - THE MESSAGE FROM THE HOTEL ROOM
Audrey waited until Ellie answered the video call before locking her hotel door.
“Why aren’t you at home?” Ellie asked.
“Dad told me to leave.”
Ellie remained inside the company lobby, watching Celeste retreat toward the elevators.
“When?”
“Last night.”
Audrey explained that Graham discovered she had saved screenshots from the gala.
He demanded her phone.
When she refused, he accused her of betraying him.
Celeste told Audrey that Ellie had abandoned the family for the Army.
“She said Mom already chose the uniform over us,” Audrey whispered.
Ellie’s face tightened.
“Why did your father tell you to report me?”
“He wanted me to send a statement to your command.”
“Did you send it?”
“No.”
Audrey opened her laptop.
She showed Ellie a folder containing emails, photographs, scanned forms, and voice recordings.
“I started saving things after the gala.”
One recording captured Graham coaching her.
Say your mother has become suspicious.
Say she thinks people are using her identity.
Say you are worried she might act irrationally when she returns.
Audrey’s voice could be heard answering:
But people are using her identity.
Graham stopped the recording.
The next file showed Celeste signing a federal visitor form.
ELEANOR “ELLIE” WHITLOCK.
The signature resembled Ellie’s, but the handwriting was wrong.
Another document authorized Graham to speak on behalf of Ellie’s family trust.
It carried the same forged signature.
Ellie felt the lobby disappear around her.
“Where did you find this?”
“In Dad’s home office.”
“Does he know you copied it?”
“I don’t think so.”
Audrey began crying.
“I should have told you sooner.”
“You were being manipulated.”
“I still stayed quiet.”
Ellie lowered her voice.
“You are telling me now.”
Audrey wiped her face.
“There’s something worse.”
She opened a photograph of a legal petition.
Graham had prepared an emergency request to suspend Ellie’s control over the family trust.
The petition claimed combat-related psychological instability made her incapable of managing financial decisions.
Audrey’s unsigned statement was listed as supporting evidence.
A private psychiatrist had already written a preliminary opinion without ever examining Ellie.
The filing date was scheduled for Monday.
Three days away.
If approved temporarily, Graham could control the trust’s voting shares.
