Chapter 2 - THE RETURN GRAHAM NEVER EXPECTED

Six months before Ellie returned, Graham had asked her to join a secure video call from overseas.
He sat inside his corner office overlooking downtown Nashville.
Celeste stood behind him holding a presentation folder.
Whitlock Strategic Systems had developed transport and communications equipment for emergency agencies and defense subcontractors.
The company was preparing to compete for a federal modernization project worth more than one hundred million dollars.
Graham needed Ellie’s name attached to it.
“The proposal highlights our military-family leadership,” he explained.
“You are not a military-owned business,” Ellie said.
“No, but my wife is a decorated officer.”
“My service cannot be used as a commercial endorsement.”
“We aren’t selling your rank.”
Celeste leaned toward the camera.
“We’re showing that the company understands soldiers.”
Ellie’s eyes moved to her.
“I don’t believe we’ve met.”
“I’m Celeste Monroe. I manage executive communications.”
“She’s transformed our federal relationships,” Graham said.
Celeste smiled as though she and Graham shared a private joke.
The proposal named Ellie as co-founder, strategic adviser, and chair of the company’s military ethics council.
She held no such roles.
“I never approved this biography.”
Graham’s smile tightened.
“It’s based on public information.”
“It says I reviewed the project.”
“You reviewed an early concept years ago.”
“I told you the design needed independent testing.”
Celeste closed the folder.
“We can revise the language after submission.”
“No. Remove my name before submission.”
Graham waited until Celeste left the room.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Do you know how hard it is to run this company while you’re gone?”
“This isn’t about our marriage.”
“It’s always about the marriage with you. Your uniform enters every room before I do.”
Ellie stared at him.
For years, Graham had praised her service in public.
Privately, he increasingly treated it as competition.
“You built this company with money from our family trust,” Ellie said. “You don’t need to steal credibility too.”
“I am not stealing anything.”
“Then remove my name.”
Graham promised he would.
Two weeks later, he sent Ellie a revised cover page.
Her name was gone.
What he did not send was the full proposal.
Inside the final version, Colonel Eleanor Whitlock remained listed as executive military adviser.
The attached authorization carried her digital signature.
And the photograph beside the biography was not Ellie.
May you like
It was Celeste wearing her pendant.
👉 Graham told Ellie her name had been removed, but he had already created a replacement wife who could appear wherever the real colonel could not.
