Chapter 8 - The Clinic That Destroyed Evidence

The shipping label inside the burned H-17 box led to Westbridge Sleep and Wellness Clinic.
The facility occupied a quiet brick building outside Raleigh and advertised treatments for insomnia, chronic fatigue and anxiety.
Dr. Victor Sloan owned it.
The same doctor who had declared Mara paranoid without ever examining her.
Detective Ana Ruiz obtained the clinic’s delivery records.
Daniel had brought in a rolled mattress cover less than an hour before police searched the storage unit.
The cover was listed as “contaminated therapeutic fabric.”
It was scheduled for medical-waste destruction that evening.
Ana called the disposal contractor.
The truck had already collected the package.
Police intercepted it seventeen miles from an incineration facility.
Inside a sealed red bag, investigators found the cover Mara had tried to open.
Several rectangular film strips remained embedded beneath the top layer.
Some were partially dissolved.
Others still carried the H-17 hexagonal pattern.
The evidence was rushed to a toxicology laboratory.
Dr. Sloan denied knowing what the fabric contained.
He claimed Daniel described it as an experimental sleep product that required safe disposal.
Ana showed him the medical declaration he had prepared about Mara.
“You wrote that she was suffering from paranoid ideation.”
“Based on information from her husband.”
“You never examined her.”
“Daniel was deeply concerned.”
“You accepted forty thousand dollars from Northstar Clinical Ventures.”
Dr. Sloan stopped talking.
The payment had arrived three days after he signed the draft declaration.
Nora filed an emergency injunction preventing the Asteria board from removing Mara until the toxicology results were complete.
Daniel responded by calling a press conference.
He described Mara as a brilliant scientist experiencing a painful psychological crisis.
He asked the public to respect her privacy.
Then he announced that he would temporarily assume executive control of Asteria.
Mara watched the broadcast from Nora’s office.
He spoke gently.
He looked heartbroken.
He wore the wedding ring she had not seen him wear in weeks.
“He’s turning an attempted poisoning into a story about his devotion,” Mara said.
Nora closed the laptop.
“Only until the laboratory identifies what was inside that film.”
Two hours later, Dr. Reid called.
The microneedles contained a prescription sedative combined with a neurotoxic research compound.
Low repeated exposure could cause dizziness, memory disruption, confusion and anxiety.
Higher exposure could damage the nervous system permanently.
Mara gripped the edge of the desk.
Daniel had not been trying to frighten her.
May you like
He had been chemically creating the symptoms he later called madness.
👉 The toxicology report proved Mara had been poisoned, but the compound’s origin showed that someone inside Asteria had tested it on another person first.
