Chapter 6 - The Cover She Was Not Allowed to Wash
Mara waited until Daniel left for work.
Then she removed the sheets.
Beneath them was a fitted cooling cover Daniel had insisted should never be machine-washed.
The care label said professional cleaning only.
Mara touched the fabric with gloved fingers.
Nothing looked unusual.
Under bright light, she noticed faint rectangular seams beneath the surface near her side of the bed.
She lifted one edge.
A narrow translucent strip had been bonded between the cover’s layers.
Before she could remove it, the front door opened.
Daniel was home three hours early.
“What are you doing?”
Mara turned.
He stood in the bedroom doorway without his jacket.
“I’m washing the cover.”
“I told you it requires special cleaning.”
“Why?”
“It’s expensive.”
He crossed the room and pulled the fabric from her hands.
“Daniel, let me see it.”
“You’re cutting open our mattress because you think it is poisoning you.”
“I found something inside.”
“There is nothing inside.”
He rolled the cover tightly.
Mara reached for it.
Daniel grabbed her wrist.
Not hard enough to leave a bruise.
Hard enough to stop her.
They stared at each other.
He released her immediately.
“I’m trying to protect you from doing something you’ll regret.”
“Where are you taking it?”
“To be cleaned.”
Daniel carried the cover downstairs.
Mara followed him, but sudden dizziness forced her to grip the railing.
He looked back.
For one terrible moment, she thought she saw satisfaction.
By the time Mara reached the driveway, Daniel’s car was gone.
He returned that evening without the cover.
He had replaced it with a new one.
The original had been “damaged during cleaning.”
Mara asked for the company receipt.
Daniel told her to stop.
That night, she locked the bedroom door and slept in the guest room.
At 2:00 a.m., she heard Daniel trying the handle.
“Mara?”
She remained silent.
“I know you’re awake.”
She did not answer.
The next morning, Lena sent Mara an email requesting an emergency board review of her leadership fitness.
Attached were statements from Daniel, three employees and Dr. Victor Sloan, a physician Mara had never met.
Dr. Sloan claimed her behavior suggested severe paranoid ideation.
The board hearing was scheduled in five days.
Mara finally understood the timing.
The bed was not meant to kill her quickly.
