Chapter 1 - The Marks Beneath His Shirt

“Don’t go home.”
Dr. Samuel Reid locked the examination-room door before Daniel Ellison could pull his gray shirt back over his shoulders.
Daniel sat stiffly on the paper-covered table.
Beneath his left shoulder blade, dozens of tiny red marks formed three nearly perfect honeycomb clusters.
They did not resemble hives.
They did not resemble insect bites.
Each mark was spaced too evenly.
Mara sat near the wall in a beige sweater, both hands covering her mouth.
For four months, Daniel had called her irrational every time she complained that their bed made her skin burn.
He said her dizziness came from stress.
He said her confusion came from exhaustion.
He told doctors she had become paranoid since her mother’s death.
Now the same pattern was appearing on his body after one night spent on her side of the mattress.
“It’s just a rash,” Daniel said.
Dr. Reid raised a magnifying lens.
Something almost invisible protruded from Daniel’s skin.
Using sterile forceps, he removed a translucent fragment no larger than a grain of sand and dropped it into a specimen tube.
Under the examination light, a tiny hexagonal structure became visible.
Mara stopped breathing.
Six years earlier, she had designed that shape.
It belonged to an experimental microneedle film developed by her company, Asteria Biomedical.
The project had never been approved for public use.
“That was meant for me,” she whispered.
Daniel’s phone slipped from his jacket and struck the floor.
The screen lit up.
A message from Lena Hart appeared.
Did she sleep on her side? Delete this.
Daniel lunged for the phone.
Mara reached it first.
Dr. Reid stepped between Daniel and the door.
Outside, fast footsteps approached.
Dr. Reid had already sent photographs of the marks to a toxicologist and contacted hospital security.
A Raleigh police officer appeared through the narrow window.
“Keep him in that room,” the officer told someone in the hallway.
Daniel’s face lost all color.
Mara held the phone with both hands, reading Lena’s message again.
Lena was not only Daniel’s colleague.
She was Asteria’s head of advanced delivery research—the one person besides Mara who knew how the abandoned film had been manufactured.
Mara looked at her husband.
“Who bought the mattress?”
Daniel said nothing.
The doorknob turned from outside.
For months, he had convinced everyone that Mara’s fear existed only inside her mind.

Now the evidence was embedded in his skin.
👉 To understand why Daniel turned their bed into a weapon, the story must return to the first night Mara woke with a burning pattern on her shoulder.
