Chapter 12 - The Boardroom Where No One Called Her Paranoid
Mara entered Asteria’s boardroom with Nora on one side and Rachel on the other.
She still experienced headaches.
Her left hand sometimes tingled.
Dr. Shah could not yet promise that every neurological effect would disappear.
But Mara walked into the room under her own power.
Daniel’s chair was empty.
Lena’s access badge lay sealed inside an evidence bag.
The directors avoided Mara’s eyes.
Board chair Charles Vance cleared his throat.
“We are deeply relieved you’re safe.”
Mara placed Daniel’s incapacity petition on the table.
“You were prepared to remove me before anyone independently examined me.”
Charles shifted.
“We relied on information from your husband and senior research leadership.”
“You relied on convenience.”
No one answered.
Mara displayed the timeline.
Every time she questioned missing prototypes, Daniel reported emotional instability.
Every time she described physical symptoms, Lena called them paranoia.
Every time she refused the acquisition, the board treated resistance as evidence of impairment.
“You did not need proof that I was unstable,” Mara said. “You needed permission to stop listening.”
One director began apologizing.
Mara stopped him.
“Apologies without structural change are public relations.”
She demanded an independent investigation into the board’s conduct.
All medical incapacity decisions would require physicians chosen by an outside ethics committee.
Spouses could no longer inherit executive authority automatically.
Employees accused of psychological instability would receive independent representation before losing access or employment.
Whistleblowers such as Owen could report directly to regulators.
The board approved every measure.
Then Mara addressed the Arcwell acquisition.
She rejected it permanently.
Charles warned that shareholders might sue.
“Let them,” Mara replied. “A company that almost became a weapon against its founder does not need a buyer. It needs a conscience.”
She also created a medical fund for Rachel’s lifelong treatment.
Rachel looked at her.
“I don’t want charity.”
“It isn’t charity. Asteria failed you.”
The board voted to accept responsibility and fund compensation for Rachel.
Mara did not reclaim her leadership by pretending she had never been harmed.
She reclaimed it by naming every failure clearly.
After the meeting, Nora received a call from prosecutors.
Daniel had changed his story.
He now claimed Mara designed the poisoning herself to block the acquisition and destroy him during their divorce.
