Chapter 11 - The Recording Behind the Acquisition
Lena refused to unlock the insurance file.
Then investigators showed her Daniel’s message blaming her for the entire operation.
Her confidence cracked.
“He promised we would run Asteria together.”
Ana placed another document in front of her.
Daniel had negotiated a private employment contract with Arcwell Therapeutics.
After the acquisition, he would become regional president.
Lena’s name appeared nowhere.
Arcwell planned to terminate the entire advanced research team after acquiring the patents.
Daniel had never intended to protect her career.
He had used her expertise, just as he used Mara’s trust.
Lena unlocked the file.
The first recording came from Daniel’s apartment eighteen months earlier.
Mara’s voice was not present.
Daniel and Lena discussed the rejected acquisition.
“She will never sell voluntarily,” Daniel said.
“Then remove her from the vote,” Lena replied.
“The board needs medical evidence.”
“We can create symptoms.”
Daniel paused.
“Nothing fatal.”
“Not at first.”
Another recording captured them discussing Rachel.
Lena explained that low-dose NX-4 caused confusion while leaving routine blood tests nearly normal.
Daniel asked whether it could be delivered without injection.
Lena described embedding microneedle film inside bedding.
Daniel laughed.
“She already thinks the mattress is hurting her back. She’ll sound insane before she finishes the sentence.”
Mara stopped listening.
Nora paused the recording.
“You don’t need to hear all of it.”
“Yes, I do.”
The final recording was made two weeks before the clinic discovery.
Daniel complained that Mara had begun sleeping in the guest room.
Lena asked whether they should move the strips.
Daniel answered:
“Leave them. I’ll sleep on her side one night and tell her nothing happened.”
Lena warned him that recently installed film could remain active.
Daniel dismissed the risk.
That arrogance placed the microneedles in his own skin.
His body became the evidence that destroyed their story.
The recordings also exposed the financial motive.
Arcwell offered Daniel a forty-million-dollar private bonus if the acquisition closed before the end of the quarter.
Lena would receive five million through Northstar.
Mara’s removal was worth more to them than her health, marriage or life.
Prosecutors approved arrest warrants.
Police reached Daniel’s temporary hotel room before dawn.
He did not resist.
He asked only one question.
“Did Lena talk?”
Ana placed him in handcuffs.
