Chapter 15 - The Bed Brought into Court
The prosecution transported the mattress into the federal courtroom inside a sealed evidence cover.
Jurors watched technicians remove sections layer by layer.
Beneath the clean white fabric sat the cooling cover Daniel had purchased.
Inside its seams were narrow channels.
Each channel held dissolvable strips positioned beneath the places where Mara’s shoulder, ribs and thigh rested when she slept on her left side.
Dr. Shah explained the mechanism.
Body heat activated the adhesive.
Pressure pushed the microscopic needles through the fabric and into the skin.
The film dissolved gradually, leaving marks that faded before most medical appointments.
Sedatives kept Mara asleep while NX-4 entered her body.
The strips were installed in timed sections.
Daniel could activate fresh doses simply by replacing a section of the cover.
The final channels contained far stronger concentrations.
Daniel watched without expression.
His attorney argued that Lena designed and installed everything.
Then prosecutors played the recording of Daniel discussing Mara’s sleeping position.
Next came the text displayed in Dr. Reid’s clinic:
Did she sleep on her side? Delete this.
Lena testified under a cooperation agreement.
She admitted creating the films, testing them on Rachel and helping Daniel install the first strips.
She also admitted that Daniel replaced later sections himself.
“He wanted control of the schedule,” she said.
Daniel’s attorney attacked her.
“You poisoned two women and now expect this jury to believe Mr. Ellison controlled you?”
Lena looked at Daniel.
“No. We controlled each other until he decided I was disposable.”
Rachel testified about the pillow-cover experiment.
Owen explained the altered archive logs.
Dr. Sloan admitted accepting money to prepare false psychiatric statements.
Then Mara took the stand.
She described waking with burning skin.
Forgetting meetings.
Sleeping in the guest room and immediately improving.
She described how Daniel smiled when she questioned the bed.
“He never needed me to believe I was crazy,” she said. “He needed everyone else to believe it before I understood what was happening.”
The defense asked whether Mara had experienced anxiety.
“Yes.”
“Memory loss?”
“Yes.”
“Paranoid thoughts?”
“I accurately suspected my husband had altered my mattress.”
Several jurors looked toward Daniel.
The defense attorney changed direction.
He suggested Mara wanted to punish Daniel for the affair with Lena.
Mara answered calmly.
“The affair broke our marriage. The poison almost broke my brain. Those are not the same accusation.”
The prosecution rested after displaying Daniel’s private Arcwell bonus agreement.
