Chapter 16 - The Future He Had Chosen Without Her

The final recording came from Daniel’s private office.
Lena asked what would happen if Mara survived but could no longer work.
Daniel poured a drink.
“She’ll live somewhere comfortable.”
“With you?”
He laughed.
“I’ll be too busy running Arcwell’s biomedical division.”
“What about guardianship?”
“I’ll control her shares, patents and medical decisions. A private facility can handle the rest.”
Lena asked whether Mara might recover.
Daniel answered:
“Then Sloan keeps documenting instability until she stops trying.”
The recording continued.
Daniel described selling their home after placing Mara in long-term care.
He planned to purchase a penthouse with Lena after the acquisition.
Lena asked whether he would divorce Mara.
“No. Staying married keeps me in control.”
Mara listened from the witness bench.
Daniel had not planned to become a widower.
He had planned to become the publicly devoted husband of a living woman who could no longer contradict him.
His attorney requested a mistrial, arguing that Lena recorded him illegally.
The judge denied it.
The jury deliberated for two days.
Daniel was convicted of attempted murder, conspiracy, wire fraud, evidence tampering, theft of trade secrets and attempted financial exploitation of an incapacitated spouse.
Lena was convicted under her plea agreement for conspiracy, illegal human testing and assault.
Dr. Sloan pleaded guilty to fraud and obstruction.
Daniel showed no emotion until the judge ordered him held without release pending sentencing.
Then he turned toward Mara.
“You destroyed everything.”
Mara looked at him through the space between two deputies.
“No. I woke up.”
At sentencing, Rachel described living with permanent neurological injuries.
Owen described losing his career and being treated like a criminal.
Asteria employees described the fear created by Daniel’s manipulation.
Mara spoke last.
“You believed that if a woman sounded frightened, people would stop hearing the facts in her words. You were almost right.”
Daniel received a sentence that ensured he would spend decades in prison.
The court ordered his assets seized for restitution.
His Arcwell agreement was void.
His claims to Mara’s company, patents and estate were permanently terminated.
Lena received a substantial prison sentence.
Asteria funded Rachel’s care without requiring confidentiality.
Dr. Sloan lost his license.
When the hearing ended, reporters asked Mara whether she felt safe.
She considered the question.

“Safer,” she said. “Healing is not the same thing as a verdict.”
👉 Daniel was sentenced and stripped of control, but Mara still had to decide whether she could ever sleep inside her own home again.
