Chapter 7 - The Storage Unit
Owen contacted Mara from a prepaid phone.
He was hiding at his sister’s house outside Durham.
Daniel had accused him of stealing H-17 after Owen discovered that eight prototype sheets were never destroyed.
Security footage showed Lena removing a refrigerated container from the archive.
Daniel later altered the access log using Mara’s credentials.
Owen copied the original footage before his account was disabled.
“Why didn’t you go to the police?”
“I did. Mr. Ellison told them I was trying to sell company secrets.”
Daniel had filed a theft report first.
He transformed Owen from witness into suspect.
Owen sent Mara a video clip.
Lena entered the archive at 11:43 p.m.
Daniel stood outside the secure door.
They left together carrying the H-17 container.
Mara watched the video three times.
It proved theft.
It did not prove the film entered her mattress.
Owen had more.
Two months earlier, a custom upholstery contractor contacted him with questions about preserving microneedle structures inside fabric.
The contractor believed Asteria had commissioned a research installation.
Owen found the request strange and saved the invoice.
The delivery address belonged to a storage facility near Raleigh.
Mara called attorney Nora Blake, Asteria’s former general counsel.
Daniel had pushed Nora out six months earlier after accusing her of resisting necessary restructuring.
Nora listened without interrupting.
“Do not go to that unit alone.”
Mara wanted to act immediately.
Nora insisted on obtaining a court order through an emergency civil filing based on the stolen prototype evidence.
They also contacted Detective Ana Ruiz, who specialized in corporate and technology crimes.
Ana reviewed the archive footage.
“This proves unauthorized removal,” she said. “We still need a connection to the suspected poisoning.”
The storage facility’s security system showed Daniel entering the unit that morning with the rolled mattress cover.
They were preparing the warrant request when Daniel arrived at Nora’s office.
He claimed Mara had disappeared during a mental-health crisis.
He asked Nora to tell him where she was.
Nora refused.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You are encouraging a sick woman’s delusions.”
Mara listened from the conference room behind a closed door.
He sounded calm.
Concerned.
Convincing.
Then his phone rang.
Lena’s name appeared on the receptionist’s screen because Daniel had connected to the office guest system.
He stepped outside to answer.
Nora looked at Mara.
“He has practiced sounding like the reasonable one.”
Mara watched Daniel through the glass.
“Then we stop arguing with his story and let the evidence speak.”
The warrant was approved that afternoon.
But when police opened the storage unit, the mattress cover was gone.
