Chapter 17 - The House Without the Mattress
Mara did not return to the bedroom for six months.
The mattress was evidence.
The bed frame was removed.
The flooring beneath it was replaced, even though testing showed no contamination.
Daniel’s clothes disappeared into storage.
His photographs came down.
Still, Mara stood at the bedroom door and felt her skin burn.
Her body remembered danger even when her mind knew the room was safe.
She slept in the guest room.
Some nights, she left every light on.
Other nights, she woke convinced she had felt another needle.
Her doctors called it trauma.
They did not call it paranoia.
That difference mattered.
Mara considered selling the house.
Nora asked whether leaving would make her feel free.
“I don’t know.”
“Then don’t decide because fear is demanding an immediate answer.”
Mara renovated the bedroom slowly.
She replaced the walls with warmer colors.
She installed ordinary furniture selected by herself.

Rachel came one afternoon to help choose curtains.
They stood in the empty room together.
“I thought I would never trust a pillow again,” Rachel said.
“Do you?”
“Some nights.”
Mara smiled.
“That sounds honest.”
They chose simple cotton curtains.

No temperature controls.
Nothing experimental.
Mara’s first night back lasted only twenty minutes.
Her heart raced.
She returned to the guest room.
The second attempt lasted an hour.
The third lasted until sunrise.
When she woke, sunlight rested across the clean mattress.
No dizziness.
No burning.
No Daniel beside her explaining what she should believe.
Mara cried into the pillow.

Because she had slept in her own room and awakened as herself.
