Chapter 8 - The Test Marco Could Not Control
Rebecca arranged the DNA testing through an independent laboratory used by federal courts.
Andrea provided a sample under direct observation.
Leo’s pediatrician collected his sample during an ordinary appointment so Marco would not become suspicious.
The results were expected within ten days.
The birthday party was eight days away.
Andrea hated waiting.
Every morning, Marco behaved as though nothing had changed.
He ate breakfast beside her.
He asked Leo about school.
He kissed Andrea before leaving the house.
Then he met Valerie in a rented apartment across town.
A private investigator photographed them entering together.
The images confirmed the affair, but Rebecca warned Andrea that adultery alone would not stop the custody attack.
“We prove the forged records, the theft and the financial motive,” she said. “Then the affair becomes part of the conspiracy.”
The financial motive was still incomplete.
Marco’s desire for control of the trust was obvious, but Rebecca needed evidence that he planned to use the assets personally.
Andrea asked the Whitmore company’s internal auditor to review businesses Marco had recommended.
Three consulting firms had received unusually large payments.
All three used the same registered agent.
The agent was Valerie’s brother.
More than four million dollars had moved from Whitmore subsidiaries into those companies over two years.
Marco had been stealing before Leo’s fifth birthday.
The trust shares would allow Andrea to remove him from the company permanently.
He needed control before the audit exposed him.
Valerie’s false maternity claim offered the perfect weapon.
If Andrea were removed as trustee, Marco could conceal the stolen money, approve new contracts and drain the company further.
The DNA results arrived two days early.
Andrea opened them inside Rebecca’s office.
The probability that Andrea was Leo’s biological mother exceeded 99.99 percent.
Valerie’s claim was scientifically impossible.
Andrea cried with relief.
Then Rebecca turned to the second page.
“There’s a problem.”
Someone had already submitted another DNA report to family court.
That report claimed Valerie was Leo’s biological mother.
It came from Hartwell Genetic Services.
The laboratory was licensed.
Its director had signed the certification.
Two contradictory reports now existed.
“This is bigger than forged paper,” Rebecca said. “Someone inside that laboratory is helping them.”
Andrea looked at the date.
The false test had been completed using a sample supposedly taken from Leo three weeks earlier.
