Chapter 1 - The Mother He Tried to Erase
“Come to your real mommy.”
Valerie Stone opened her arms beneath an arch of white roses.
Beside her, Marco Bellini smiled as though he had just given his five-year-old son the greatest birthday gift imaginable.
More than a hundred guests stood frozen across the sunlit garden.
Champagne glasses hovered near open mouths. Board members, relatives and parents from Leo’s school stared at Andrea Bellini, waiting for her to collapse.
Andrea felt as though the ground had disappeared beneath her heels.
She had spent the morning decorating the garden for her son. She had ordered his favorite chocolate cake, arranged blue balloons around the fountain and personally placed a photograph of his first day home beside the gift table.
Now her husband stood before everyone with one arm around his mistress.
And he was calling that woman Leo’s mother.
Marco picked up the microphone he had dropped onto the grass.
“Andrea has hidden the truth for five years,” he announced. “Valerie gave birth to Leo. My wife used her money and influence to take him.”
A wave of horrified whispers spread through the garden.
Valerie stepped toward the little boy.
“You don’t have to be afraid anymore, sweetheart.”
Leo did not run to her.
He backed away.
His small hands tightened around an old silver picture frame.
“She’s not my mom.”
Marco’s smile vanished.
“Leo, we practiced this.”
Andrea looked sharply at him.
Practiced?
Leo’s lower lip trembled, but he pointed directly at Valerie.
“I saw her taking Mommy’s papers.”
Behind the photograph, a folded piece of paper slipped loose.
Andrea caught a glimpse of a printed security image.
Valerie stood in Andrea’s private office with the wall safe open.
Andrea’s heartbreak turned cold.
“Where did you find that?”
Before Leo could answer, the garden gates opened.
Detective Daniel Harris entered with Andrea’s attorney, Rebecca Cole. Behind them walked Rosa Martinez, the family’s former house manager.
Daniel held a tablet displaying footage from Andrea’s office.
He looked from the screen to Valerie.
“Keep her here.”
Marco stopped breathing.
Valerie clutched his arm and searched desperately for an exit.
Andrea pulled Leo behind her and faced the husband who had expected public humiliation to silence her.
“You should’ve checked the camera.”
But the footage of Valerie opening the safe was only the beginning.
