Chapter 19 - The Birthday Leo Chose

Three months later, Andrea asked Leo whether he wanted another birthday party.
He shook his head.
“No microphones.”
“No microphones,” she promised.
“What about Miss Valerie?”
“She won’t be there.”
“Daddy?”
Andrea paused.
“No.”
Leo looked relieved, then guilty for feeling relieved.
Andrea pulled him into her arms.
“You are allowed to feel safe.”
They planned a small celebration in the same garden.
Only people Leo trusted were invited.
His classmates came.
Rosa returned as household manager.
Rebecca brought a magician who accidentally released a dove inside the dining room.
Detective Daniel stopped by with a blue toy police car.
There were no journalists.
No board members.
No speeches about the trust.
The white flower arch had been replaced with blue streamers and paper stars.
Leo chose chocolate cake with too much frosting.
Before blowing out the candles, he carried the old silver frame to Andrea.
“I don’t want the bad paper behind it anymore.”
Andrea removed Rosa’s note and the security image.
The evidence had completed its purpose.
She placed both inside a secure legal archive.
Then she returned the photograph to the frame.
It showed Andrea holding newborn Leo while Thomas Whitmore stood beside them, crying proudly.
Leo pointed to Andrea’s hospital bracelet.
“That proves you’re my mommy?”
Andrea smiled.
“No.”
He looked confused.
“What proves it?”
“The bracelet is evidence that I gave birth to you. But being your mommy is everything that happened after that.”
She counted softly.
“Every night I held you when you were sick. Every lunch I packed. Every story we read. Every time you reached for me because you knew you were safe.”
Leo wrapped his arms around her neck.
“So I prove it?”
“You do.”
He placed the photograph beside the cake.
Then he made his wish and blew out the candles.
Andrea did not ask what he wished for.
That night, she found a folded note beneath his pillow.
In uneven handwriting, Leo had written:
I wished Mommy would never go away.
Andrea lay beside him until he fell asleep.
May you like
She intended to keep that promise for as long as life allowed.
👉 Leo reclaimed the birthday his father had stolen, and one year later he returned to the garden with a new name for the woman who had saved their family.
