Chapter 14 - The Photograph Behind the Photograph
Marco dropped the microphone.
For the first time that afternoon, his confidence disappeared.
Leo ran to the gift table and grabbed the old silver frame.
It contained a photograph of Andrea holding him on the day she brought him home from the hospital.
Andrea’s face was pale from surgery.
A hospital band circled her wrist.
Leo pressed the frame against his chest.
“I saw Miss Valerie taking Mommy’s papers.”
Valerie stepped forward.
“He’s confused.”
“No!” Leo shouted. “Rosa showed me.”
He pulled the folded paper from behind the frame.
The printed image fell onto the grass.
Andrea picked it up.
Valerie stood clearly beside the open office safe.
The forged surrogacy agreement lay in her hand.
Andrea’s expression changed.
“Where did you find this?”
“Rosa put it there.”
The garden gates opened.
Detective Daniel and Rebecca entered with Rosa behind them.
Guests moved aside.
Daniel held the hidden-camera footage on a tablet.
“Keep Ms. Stone on the property.”
Marco recovered enough to raise the microphone.
“This is a private family dispute. No one has committed a crime.”
Daniel rotated the tablet.
The footage showed Valerie covering the visible camera before opening the safe.
It showed her removing the original documents.
It showed her replacing them with the forged contract Marco had just displayed.
The guests erupted.
Journalists raised their phones.
Valerie grabbed Marco’s arm.
“You said there were no other cameras.”
Andrea stared directly at her husband.
“You should’ve checked the camera.”
Marco tried to regain control.
He insisted Valerie had retrieved documents that belonged to her.
He claimed Andrea had staged the footage.
Then he pointed to the DNA report.
“The science proves Valerie is Leo’s mother.”
Rebecca stepped onto the grass.
“No. The report proves someone at Hartwell Genetic Services was paid to commit fraud.”
A certified document appeared on Daniel’s tablet.
It showed Andrea’s independent DNA results.
Andrea was Leo’s biological mother.
Valerie was not.
Marco looked toward the gates.
Security had already closed them.
Valerie began backing away.
Then Detective Daniel received a message.
Investigators had traced the payment for the false DNA report.
It did not come from Valerie.
