Chapter 15 - The Lie He Funded

Detective Daniel displayed the financial transfer on the garden screen.

Marco Bellini had paid Hartwell Genetic Services ninety thousand dollars through one of Valerie’s brother’s consulting companies.

The payment description read:

Historical family verification.

The laboratory director had accepted money to create a report using Leo’s stolen hair and a falsified maternal sample.

Valerie’s name appeared on the document, but the genetic data belonged to another woman.

Marco had not merely repeated Valerie’s lie.

He had purchased it.

Marco lowered the microphone.

“You cannot prove what the payment was for.”

Rebecca held up the co-trustee amendment.

“The same consulting company received two million dollars from Whitmore subsidiaries. You approved every contract.”

Several board members turned toward Marco.

He had invited them to witness Andrea’s humiliation.

Now they were witnessing his fraud.

Valerie began crying.

“He told me Andrea stole my chance to have a family.”

Andrea looked at her.

“You worked at a maternity clinic. You knew exactly what those records meant.”

Valerie’s tears stopped.

She had not been manipulated into ignorance.

She had forged medical histories, stolen genetic material and frightened a child.

Marco tried to distance himself from her.

“Valerie handled the documents.”

She stared at him.

“You planned this before Leo was born.”

The garden went silent.

Marco’s head snapped toward her.

“Stop talking.”

Valerie laughed bitterly.

“You said she would sign before the party.”

Andrea took one step closer.

“What did he plan before Leo was born?”

Valerie looked at Marco, finally understanding he intended to blame everything on her.

“He knew about the trust before he married you.”

Marco lunged toward her.

Security restrained him.

Valerie continued.

Marco had learned through his financial firm that Thomas Whitmore intended to place company shares into a trust for Andrea’s first child.

He approached Andrea knowing a future child could give him access to the Whitmore empire.

When Andrea became pregnant, Marco contacted Valerie.

She entered the hospital on the night of Leo’s birth and copied the maternity records.

They planned to create a false claim if Andrea ever refused to share control.

The conspiracy was not a desperate reaction.

It had been built into the marriage from the beginning.

Andrea looked at the man she had loved for seven years.

“Was any of it real?”

Marco said nothing.

But Valerie had not finished.
