Chapter 18 - The Number on the Silver Frame

The silver frame had belonged to Andrea’s father.

Thomas Whitmore gave it to her on the day Leo came home from the hospital.

On the back, he engraved the date and Leo’s hospital identification number.

Marco used that number as the password for an offshore account.

Investigators found it inside Valerie’s encrypted messages.

The cruelty of the choice stunned Andrea.

Marco had transformed a grandfather’s gift into the lock protecting stolen money.

The account held more than nine million dollars.

The funds were recovered and returned to Whitmore Medical Properties.

Further searches uncovered drafts of Marco’s plans after the trust takeover.

He intended to sell two medical office buildings, transfer the proceeds through Valerie’s companies and move overseas.

Andrea would have been left facing a public maternity scandal, frozen assets and a custody battle.

Marco expected shame to prevent her from fighting quickly.

He had underestimated every person he dismissed.

Rosa preserved the footage.

Rebecca traced the false filings.

Detective Daniel followed the money.

Leo refused to repeat the lie.

And Andrea remained standing when Marco expected her to break.

Valerie accepted a plea agreement and received a prison sentence for conspiracy, fraud, theft and unlawful use of medical information.

Her cooperation reduced the sentence, but did not remove it.

The Hartwell laboratory director lost his license and was imprisoned.

Valerie’s brother was convicted of laundering stolen company funds.

Marco refused every plea offer.

At trial, he blamed Andrea, Valerie, the board and even Leo.

The jury convicted him on all major counts.

He received a lengthy prison sentence and was ordered to pay restitution.

The court terminated his decision-making authority over Leo.

Whether limited contact could ever occur would be considered only when Leo was older and after extensive professional review.

Andrea did not teach Leo to hate his father.

She taught him that love could not require lying.

One evening, Leo asked whether Marco had ever loved him.

Andrea chose her words carefully.

“I think your father loved being important to you. But real love protects a child’s heart. He forgot that.”

Leo leaned against her.

“You didn’t forget.”

“No,” Andrea whispered. “I never will.”

👉 Justice returned the money and protected Leo, but Andrea still had to repair the birthday memory Marco had turned into a public nightmare.
