Chapter 8 - The Last Night Before Court

Olivia spent the night before the hearing inside Sarah’s guest room.
Her hotel money had run out.
Sarah refused to let an eight-months-pregnant client sleep in her car.
A bassinet stood in the corner of the room.
Sarah had borrowed it from her sister.
“You need somewhere ready for the baby,” she said.
Olivia touched the white fabric.
Nathan had kept the nursery.
He had also requested temporary custody immediately after birth.
His petition claimed Olivia lacked housing, income and emotional stability.
Every condition he cited had been created by him.
Olivia sat on the edge of the bed holding the photograph.
“What if the DNA is wrong?”
Sarah sat beside her.
“Then we continue fighting with the evidence we already have.”
“What if Henry Whitmore meets me and wishes I wasn’t his daughter?”
“He has searched for thirty-one years.”
“He searched for a baby. I’m a stranger.”
Sarah looked toward Olivia’s stomach.
“You are about to meet your own child. Will she be a stranger when they place her in your arms?”
“No.”
“Neither were you to the woman in that photograph.”
Olivia began crying.
She had spent her life training herself not to need people.
Hope felt more dangerous than loneliness.
At midnight, Henry Whitmore arrived at a DNA collection center near Charlotte.
Marcus met him there.
Henry gave the confirmation sample, then called Sarah.
He did not ask about money or the divorce.
His first question was whether Olivia was safe.
Sarah placed the phone on speaker.
Olivia could hear an older man breathing on the other end.
Neither knew what to say.
Finally, Henry spoke.
“Do you still have the photograph?”
“Yes.”
“Your mother carried copies everywhere after you disappeared.”
Olivia pressed the picture against her chest.
“She died without finding me.”
Henry’s voice broke.
“She died believing you were alive.”
Olivia closed her eyes.
“Why?”
“Because the woman in that photograph knew how tightly you held her finger.”
For thirty-one years, Olivia had believed she had been abandoned.
One sentence changed the shape of her entire childhood.
She had not been unwanted.
She had been stolen.
Henry wanted to come immediately.
Sarah stopped him.
The court required verified results before his identity could be introduced formally.
The laboratory promised to deliver them as soon as possible.
Nathan’s hearing began at nine.
The results were expected by noon.
Nathan’s legal team planned to finish before lunch.
Olivia placed the photograph inside her court file.
Before leaving, she stood over the borrowed bassinet.
“My daughter will never wonder whether I wanted her,” she whispered.
Outside, thunder rolled across the morning sky.
Henry waited inside the laboratory lobby for the sealed report.

And in another part of the city, Nathan rehearsed the words he intended to use after Olivia lost everything.
