Chapter 12 - The Daughter Who Had Never Been Abandoned
The judge granted a private recess so Olivia could speak with Henry.
They sat inside a small conference room.
Henry remained across the table at first.
He seemed afraid that moving too close would frighten her.
Olivia studied his face.
She recognized her own eyes.
Not the color.
The expression he made when trying not to cry.
Henry opened a leather folder and removed another copy of the photograph.
It showed Catherine holding Olivia in the hospital.
A wider version included Henry standing beside them.
He looked young, terrified and happy.
“Your mother insisted on naming you Olivia,” he said. “She said it meant peace.”
Olivia looked down at the image.
“My foster records said she abandoned me.”
Henry closed his eyes.
“She spent the rest of her life looking.”
After the kidnapping, Catherine refused to leave the nursery unchanged.
Every birthday, she bought Olivia one gift and placed it inside the room.
The gifts remained stored at the Whitmore family home.
When Catherine became ill, she created a video for every year she had missed.
“She wanted you to know she never stopped being your mother.”
Olivia began sobbing.
Henry moved around the table slowly.
When she reached for him, he held her again.
“I’m sorry I didn’t find you sooner.”
“You didn’t stop.”
“Never.”
Henry explained that the Whitmore family operated a national medical-equipment company.
The kidnapping occurred after Henry discovered executives were stealing from employee health funds.
Judith Crane was connected to one of the men under investigation.
Police believed Olivia had been taken to punish Henry and force him to abandon the case.
The criminals later sold her identity into the illegal adoption network to eliminate evidence.
Henry continued the investigation even after receiving false reports of Olivia’s death.
He and Catherine placed Olivia’s inheritance inside an irrevocable trust.
If she were ever found, every asset would transfer directly to her.
The trust had grown to more than one hundred and twenty million dollars.
Olivia barely heard the number.
“What happens to it if I never came back?”
“It funds missing-child investigations.”
Henry took her hand.
“The money was never the reason we searched.”
Outside the room, Nathan had already begun telling his attorney that Olivia’s inheritance should be considered in the divorce.
He had learned nothing.
He heard wealth and immediately searched for a way to possess it.
But the trust did not merely protect Olivia from marital claims.
It contained investigative rights over any company in which Olivia held a substantial ownership interest.
Once Olivia’s identity was confirmed, Whitmore Trust attorneys had authority to audit EverHome.
Henry’s team had already begun.
The first report arrived before the recess ended.
