Chapter 14 - The Daughter Born Under Her True Name
Sarah noticed Olivia’s breathing change.
“Are you in labor?”
Olivia shook her head automatically.
Then another contraction folded her forward.
Henry was beside her immediately.
The courtroom nurse checked her and called an ambulance.
Nathan watched from across the room.
For one second, he looked frightened.
Not for Olivia.
For his access to the baby.
“I’m her father,” he told the judge. “I need to go to the hospital.”
Olivia looked at him.
“You called her leverage in your messages.”
Nathan’s face went pale.
The Whitmore team had recovered texts between him and Lauren.
One message read:
Once the baby arrives, Olivia will sign anything to keep custody.
The judge issued a temporary protective order.
Nathan could not enter Olivia’s hospital room or remove the child while the fraud and coercion investigation continued.
He shouted that Olivia was turning his daughter against him before birth.
The deputy restrained him.
Henry rode in the ambulance.
He held Olivia’s hand through every contraction.
“I don’t know how to do this,” she whispered.
“No parent does the first time.”
“What if I’m like the people who raised me?”
“You spent your life becoming the opposite.”
Olivia reached the hospital with dangerously high blood pressure.
Doctors decided to perform an emergency C-section.
Before surgery, a nurse asked for the baby’s legal surname.
Olivia looked at Henry.
Then at Sarah.
She had entered court that morning as Olivia Parker, a woman Nathan described as unwanted and alone.
She was leaving with the truth.
“Whitmore,” she said. “Her name is Catherine Mae Whitmore.”
Catherine for the mother who never stopped loving her.
Mae for the woman who gave her a safe bedroom when she needed one most.
The baby was born just after sunset.
Her cry filled the operating room.
Olivia wept as the nurse placed the child against her cheek.
Henry stood nearby wearing surgical scrubs.
When he saw his granddaughter, he covered his mouth.
“She looks like you.”
Olivia smiled weakly.
“I hope she has better judgment.”
Henry laughed through tears.
At the courthouse, investigators opened Nathan’s phone.
They discovered he and Lauren had planned to move EverHome’s remaining cash into an offshore account immediately after judgment.
The transfer instructions had already been scheduled.
If Henry had arrived twenty minutes later, more than eighteen million dollars would have disappeared.
