Chapter 10 - Mae’s Final Protection
During a recess, Sarah received the archived hospital logs from the day the prenup was supposedly signed.
Olivia had spent twelve continuous hours inside Mae Carter’s hospital room.
Her visitor badge scans showed entry at 7:04 a.m. and departure at 7:19 p.m.
The prenup was supposedly notarized at Lauren’s office at 2:30 p.m., forty miles away.
More importantly, Mae had undergone emergency surgery that afternoon.
A nurse recorded Olivia’s presence and signature as the authorized support person.
Sarah presented the hospital file.
Nathan’s attorney claimed Olivia could have left temporarily.
The badge system showed she had not.
Lauren changed her story again.
Perhaps the document had been signed the following day.
Sarah pointed to the date written in Lauren’s own handwriting.
The judge’s expression hardened.
She allowed the prenup to remain provisionally in evidence but ordered the clerk to refer it for forensic examination.
It should have been enough to damage Nathan’s credibility.
Then he introduced a new accusation.
Nathan claimed Olivia had stolen company funds.
A spreadsheet showed transfers totaling nine hundred thousand dollars into accounts under her name.
Olivia recognized none of them.
Lauren testified that she discovered the accounts during the divorce.
Sarah asked for the underlying bank records.
Nathan’s team produced statements.
The mailing address belonged to a post-office box Olivia had never rented.
The accounts had been opened using a copy of her driver’s license.
Sarah suspected identity fraud.
But suspicion was not proof.
Nathan argued that the missing money explained why EverHome carried heavy debts.
He asked the court to award him the company, home and remaining accounts as compensation.
He also requested that Olivia assume responsibility for the disputed loans.
The judge called another recess to review the documents.
Olivia’s contractions began while she sat on a hallway bench.
They were not yet regular.
Her doctor instructed her to go to the hospital if they continued.
Olivia refused to leave.
“If I go now, he wins.”
Sarah crouched in front of her.
“You and the baby matter more than property.”
“It isn’t only property. He’ll use the judgment to take her too.”
Across the hallway, Nathan laughed with Lauren.
He saw Olivia holding her stomach and smiled.
He believed her body was finally forcing her to surrender.
Then Sarah’s phone rang.
Detective Marcus Hale had opened the sealed foster-care index.
He found the name of the woman who delivered Olivia to the shelter.
She had later worked for a financial-services company.
The same company appeared in Nathan’s fabricated Cole family trust.
