Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail Made from Lies
The first false document appeared in Olivia’s email.
It was a resignation letter addressed to the EverHome board.
The letter claimed Olivia was taking an indefinite leave because pregnancy had affected her emotional stability.
Her name appeared at the bottom.
She had never written it.
Olivia called Nathan.
He told her it was only a draft.
“Why does a draft have my signature?”
“Lauren copied it from another file for formatting.”
Lauren gave the same explanation.
Both of them acted as though Olivia was unreasonable for being frightened.
Two days later, the company’s bank removed Olivia’s access to the primary operating account.
Nathan claimed the change was temporary.
Then the locks on Olivia’s executive email were reset.
Her office keycard stopped working.
Employees she had hired began avoiding her calls.
When she appeared at headquarters without warning, a security guard asked her to wait in the lobby.
“I own this company.”
The guard looked humiliated.
“Mr. Cole said you were on medical leave.”
Olivia walked past him.
She found Nathan and Lauren inside the boardroom.
They were standing too close.
Lauren’s hand rested on Nathan’s chest.
Neither moved quickly enough.
Olivia stopped in the doorway.
“How long?”
Nathan did not pretend to misunderstand.
“This is not the place.”
“It became the place when you brought her into my company.”
Lauren stepped back.
“Olivia, stress is dangerous for the baby.”
“Do not use my child to silence me.”
Nathan closed the boardroom door.
He admitted the affair had begun six months earlier.
Then he blamed Olivia.
She worked too much before the pregnancy.
She withdrew after Mae’s death.
She treated EverHome like the only thing that mattered.
“You stopped being my wife,” he said.
“And that gave you permission to forge my signature?”
His expression hardened.
“You are confused about what belongs to you.”
Olivia felt the baby move beneath her hand.
Nathan looked at her stomach, but his face showed no warmth.
The next morning, he filed for divorce.
His petition accused Olivia of reckless spending, abandonment of the business and emotional instability.
Lauren provided a sworn statement claiming Olivia had voluntarily transferred management authority.
Nathan also requested an immediate freeze on all marital accounts.
The court approved the temporary freeze before Olivia even received notice.
Her credit cards stopped working at a pharmacy checkout.
Her home-access code was changed that evening.
Nathan had security escort her from the house with one suitcase.
“You cannot throw me out while I’m pregnant.”
“The house is owned by a company.”
“My company.”
“Not according to the records.”
Nathan closed the door.
Olivia stood in the rain outside the home she had paid for.
