Chapter 9 - The Gravy on Her Face

The turkey had just been placed on the table.
Steam rose from the carved herbs and browned skin.
Vanessa lifted the gravy boat and poured a spoonful onto her plate.
Then she turned toward Evelyn.
“Your blouse looks dry.”
Daniel saw the movement too late.
Vanessa filled her mouth with gravy and spat it across the table.
The sauce struck Evelyn’s cheek and collar.
A woman near the window gasped.
One of the executives dropped his fork.
Daniel stood halfway.
“Vanessa!”
She laughed.
“She wanted honesty.”
Evelyn remained seated for three seconds.
The humiliation burned more deeply than the heat.
She looked at Daniel.
His hand went to Vanessa’s shoulder.
Not his mother’s.
“Mom, don’t make a scene.”
That sentence ended everything.
Evelyn wiped her cheek.
She remembered Thomas sanding the first Hale & Hearth pan in their garage.
She remembered mortgaging her cottage to cover payroll.
She remembered raising Daniel inside warehouses because they could not afford childcare.
And now her son was asking her to protect the woman who had spat in her face.
Evelyn stood.
She gripped the silver turkey tray with both hands.
Vanessa’s amusement vanished.
“What are you doing?”
Evelyn lifted the tray and threw it through the glass door.
The explosion shook the room.
Guests screamed and moved away.
The turkey landed outside among the shattered glass.
“You wanted honesty?” Evelyn said. “Here it is.”
Vanessa stared at the destroyed window.
“What did you just do?”
“I removed the centerpiece from your performance.”
The doorbell rang.
Evelyn wiped the remaining gravy from her face.
“Your investors are here.”
Daniel looked toward the foyer.
Through the doors stood Richard, Caroline, Miriam and Michael.
His knees seemed to weaken.
“Mom… don’t.”
Evelyn opened the sideboard drawer and removed the thin folder.
She walked past him.
Vanessa grabbed her arm.
“You are not opening that door until you fix this.”
Evelyn looked down at Vanessa’s hand.
“Remove it.”
Something in her voice made Vanessa obey.
Evelyn opened the door.
Richard saw the broken glass.
Then the stain on Evelyn’s blouse.
His expression turned colder than Vanessa had ever seen.
“What happened here?”
Evelyn stepped aside.

“Come in. Your daughter was just explaining who belongs in my house.”
👉 Vanessa expected her father to defend her, but the first document he placed on the table showed he already knew about the forged signatures.
