Chapter 6 - The Signature That Wasn’t Hers
Miriam discovered a board consent bearing Evelyn’s electronic signature.
It approved preliminary negotiations with Shaw Capital.
Evelyn had never signed it.
The document had been uploaded from Daniel’s executive account.
A second authorization allowed Vanessa to share confidential trust information with her father’s lawyers.
That signature was also false.
Miriam contacted Michael Tran, Hale & Hearth’s chief financial officer.
Michael had been uneasy for months.
Daniel and Vanessa repeatedly requested access to restricted patent valuations.
They also created a private consulting firm called VDH Strategy.
Hale & Hearth had paid the firm nearly nine hundred thousand dollars for “brand-development services.”
VDH stood for Vanessa Daniel Hale.
The money helped finance Vanessa’s luxury spending and the investor dinner.
“They’re using company funds to create the image that they’re already successful,” Michael said.
Miriam asked whether Daniel knew.
“Every payment carries his approval.”
The betrayal was no longer only personal.
Daniel had crossed from weakness into participation.
Evelyn requested copies of the original invoices, board consents and collateral proposal.
Miriam warned her that confronting them could lead to destruction of evidence.
“Then we let them continue until the investors arrive.”
“Evelyn, this is your home. You don’t have to endure another day.”
“I need Richard Shaw to see what his daughter and my son are asking him to finance.”
Richard had known Thomas for thirty years.
He was cautious, disciplined and fiercely protective of his firm’s reputation.
If Evelyn stopped the dinner privately, Vanessa would claim an old woman had sabotaged the deal out of jealousy.
If the truth emerged in the room where Vanessa planned to display her power, nobody could dismiss it.
Miriam agreed to contact Richard confidentially.
Michael began preserving financial records outside the company network.
Evelyn also checked the mansion’s interior cameras.
Most had been disabled during renovations.
One camera still operated inside the butler’s pantry.
Its lens faced part of the dining room and the hallway leading to Evelyn’s suite.
The audio was clear.
Vanessa did not know it existed.
Evelyn downloaded the previous week.
She heard Vanessa say:
“If she won’t sign before dinner, embarrass her until she does.”
Daniel replied:
“Don’t hurt her.”
Vanessa laughed.
“I don’t need to hurt her. I only need her to understand nobody at that table respects her.”
