Chapter 5 - The Price of Refusing
Vanessa started with small punishments.
She canceled Evelyn’s physical therapist, claiming there had been a scheduling problem.
She instructed the chef to stop preparing low-sodium meals.
She moved Evelyn’s cane from beside the bed to the far side of the room.
When Evelyn complained, Vanessa smiled.
“You said you wanted independence.”
Daniel saw enough to know something was wrong.
He asked no questions.
He spent longer hours at the office and returned after Evelyn had gone to bed.
Vanessa controlled the house in his absence.
She removed Evelyn’s access to the family car.
She told visitors Evelyn was too tired to receive them.
She even locked the library, claiming confidential investor files were inside.
One afternoon, Evelyn found Vanessa wearing Thomas’s gold cuff links on a chain around her neck.
“Those belonged to my husband.”
“They were in a drawer.”
“In my desk.”
Vanessa touched the chain.
“They look better this way.”
Evelyn held out her hand.
“Give them back.”
Vanessa stepped close enough that Evelyn could smell her perfume.
“Sign the consent.”
“No.”
“Then stop demanding things in my house.”
Evelyn did not raise her voice.
“You keep saying that because you need it to become true.”
Vanessa’s cheeks flushed.
She pulled the chain free and threw the cuff links onto the floor.
One slid beneath a cabinet.
Evelyn bent slowly to retrieve it.
Pain shot through her hip.
Vanessa watched without helping.
Daniel entered before Evelyn could stand.
He saw his mother on the floor and Vanessa near the doorway.
“What happened?”
Vanessa answered immediately.
“She was digging through my jewelry.”
Evelyn looked at her son.
“Those were your father’s cuff links.”
Daniel saw the gold in her hand.
He also saw Vanessa’s expression.
He chose the easiest version.
“Mom, please ask before taking things from our room.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
Vanessa smiled.
That night, Evelyn called Miriam Cole, the family attorney.
“I need copies of every trust document,” she said.
“Has Daniel asked you to sign something?”
“Yes.”
“Do not sign anything.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
Miriam heard the exhaustion in her voice.
“Are you safe?”
Evelyn looked toward the locked bedroom door.
