Chapter 13 - The Son Who Looked Away
Miriam played another recording.
Vanessa had blocked Evelyn’s physical therapist from entering the house.
Daniel stood beside her.
The therapist asked why Evelyn’s sessions had been canceled.
Vanessa said Evelyn was exaggerating her pain.
Daniel remained silent.
Another clip showed Evelyn asking for Thomas’s cuff links.
Vanessa refused.
Daniel accused his mother of entering their room without permission.
The footage did not show Daniel spitting gravy or forging the signature himself.
It showed something more difficult for him to excuse.
He repeatedly saw enough to know Evelyn was being mistreated.
He chose convenience every time.
Daniel sank into a chair.
“I never wanted this.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“You wanted the result.”
“I thought she was being harsh. I didn’t know she would—”
“Humiliate me?”
He could not finish.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“You’re blaming me because your mother controls you.”
Daniel stood.
“You spat in her face.”
“And you told her not to make a scene.”
The words struck him visibly.
Richard called the police after Miriam confirmed that the forged signatures and company payments created potential criminal exposure.
Vanessa began gathering her purse.
Evelyn stopped her.
“Leave the house keys.”
Vanessa laughed in disbelief.
“You cannot throw us onto the street tonight.”
“You have an apartment leased through VDH Strategy.”
Daniel stared at her.
“What apartment?”
Michael displayed the payment ledger.
VDH had been paying for a luxury condo downtown.
Vanessa had furnished it with company money.
Daniel knew about the consulting firm.
He did not know about the condo.
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“It was for client meetings.”
Richard recognized the address.
He had seen Vanessa enter the building with Adrian Knox, a marketing consultant Shaw Capital had previously rejected for fraud concerns.
Caroline stared at her daughter.
“Is there something else you want to tell Daniel?”
Vanessa said nothing.
Daniel’s betrayal of his mother had been driven partly by his desperate loyalty to a wife who had been planning an escape of her own.
Evelyn did not feel vindicated.
She felt tired.
The broken glass glittered beneath the chandelier.
The turkey remained outside in the cold.
Everything Vanessa had staged as evidence of wealth now looked ridiculous.
