Chapter 1 - The Turkey Through the Window
Vanessa Hale leaned across the candlelit dinner table and spat warm gravy into her mother-in-law’s face.
The room went silent.
A drop slid from Evelyn Hale’s cheek onto her cream blouse.
At seventy-two, Evelyn had endured grief, surgery and months of being treated like an unwanted guest inside the mansion she had helped build.
But she had never been humiliated like this.
Daniel stood beside his wife in a navy suit.
He did not ask whether his mother was all right.
He placed one hand on Vanessa’s shoulder.
“Mom, don’t make this worse.”
Something inside Evelyn became perfectly still.
She wiped her cheek with a white napkin.
Then she stood, lifted the silver tray holding the roasted turkey and hurled it through the floor-to-ceiling glass door.
The window exploded.
Glass scattered across the terrace. The turkey and silver tray landed in the garden beneath the white lights.
Vanessa screamed.
“What did you just do?”
Evelyn placed the gravy-stained napkin on the table.
“You wanted honesty? Here it is.”
The doorbell rang.
Daniel looked toward the foyer.
Through the front glass stood Vanessa’s parents, Richard and Caroline Shaw. Richard controlled the investment firm Daniel had spent six months trying to impress.
But they were not alone.
Beside them stood attorney Miriam Cole and Hale & Hearth’s chief financial officer, Michael Tran.
Miriam carried a briefcase.
Michael held a folder marked:
EMERGENCY SHAREHOLDER REVIEW.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Mom… don’t.”
Evelyn walked to the sideboard and removed a thin legal folder.
“Your investors are here.”
She opened the front door.
Richard stepped inside, saw the broken glass and then noticed the gravy on Evelyn’s blouse.
His eyes moved toward his daughter.
“What happened?”
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Evelyn answered first.
“She mistook patience for permission.”
She raised the folder.
“Now let’s show everyone who owns this house.”
Daniel stopped breathing.
For three years, he had allowed Vanessa to call Evelyn a freeloader.
