Chapter 14 - The Apartment Paid for by Hale & Hearth
Investigators obtained a warrant for the condo.
Inside they found clothing, jewelry and a packed suitcase.
Adrian Knox’s passport copy lay beside Vanessa’s.
Two airline tickets to Lisbon were scheduled for three weeks after the planned Shaw investment.
Vanessa intended to leave Daniel once the funds entered Hale & Hearth.
She and Adrian had created overseas accounts designed to receive inflated marketing payments from the international expansion.
The investment was never only about growing the company.
It was about creating enough financial movement to hide theft.
Daniel read the messages inside Miriam’s office the following morning.
Vanessa wrote:
Once Daniel pledges the family assets, he won’t be able to stop anything without admitting what he signed.
Adrian replied:
And the old woman?
Vanessa answered:
She’ll be in assisted living before the audit starts.
Daniel lowered the tablet.
He had nearly sacrificed his mother, his father’s company and his own future for a woman who planned to disappear.
Miriam did not comfort him.
“You were not deceived about Evelyn.”
He looked up.
“I know.”
“You saw what Vanessa was doing.”
“I kept telling myself it would stop after the investment.”
“You valued peace in your marriage over your mother’s safety.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Police charged Vanessa with attempted financial fraud, identity misuse, conspiracy and assault for the gravy incident.
The investigation also included company embezzlement through VDH.
Adrian was arrested before reaching the airport.
Daniel was not immediately arrested.
But he remained under investigation for approving false invoices and using the forged consent.
The board removed him as chief executive.
Michael became interim CEO.
Daniel’s performance shares were placed in escrow pending a trust ruling.
Evelyn filed for a protective order removing Vanessa from Hale House.
Daniel was also required to leave.
He stood in the foyer with one suitcase.
The new temporary glass panel covered the broken doorway.
“Where am I supposed to go?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“For years, employees lost jobs when executives made careless decisions. You called it accountability.”
“Mom…”
“You are not being abandoned. You have money, education and options.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I thought this was my home.”
“It was your home. You treated it like ownership.”
Evelyn handed him the occupancy termination.
“You may return when I decide your presence feels safe.”
Daniel left without arguing.
