Chapter 8 - The Investors Who Knew Too Much

Richard and Caroline Shaw arrived later than expected.
Vanessa became irritated.
“They know dinner started at seven.”
Daniel checked his phone.
No message.
What Vanessa did not know was that her parents were meeting Miriam and Michael two blocks away.
Miriam showed them the forged consents.
Michael presented the VDH Strategy payments.
Richard read the collateral proposal twice.
“My daughter told me Daniel owned the house.”
“He does not,” Miriam said.
“She said Evelyn had transferred control years ago.”
“She did not.”
Richard looked at Caroline.
His wife’s face had gone still.
They had invested in businesses for decades. They had seen founders pushed aside, families manipulated and elderly owners pressured into signing documents they did not understand.
Richard had never imagined his own daughter would attempt it.
“Does Vanessa know the signatures are false?” he asked.
Michael opened an email.
Vanessa had written:
Evelyn won’t sign willingly. Use the version Daniel uploaded so we can keep the schedule moving.
Richard closed his eyes.
Caroline whispered, “What has she become?”
Miriam did not answer.
She asked them to attend the dinner as planned.
“Evelyn wants you to see the household dynamic before any announcement is made.”
Richard disliked the idea.
“If she’s being mistreated, we stop it now.”
“She believes public evidence is necessary because Vanessa has already prepared a narrative describing her as confused and resentful.”
Caroline’s face hardened.
“That sounds like my daughter.”
They entered the property with Miriam and Michael behind them.
At the same time, Evelyn sat at the dining table under Vanessa’s rules.
Her chair had been moved away from the head of the table.
Vanessa occupied that seat.
Daniel sat to her right.
Evelyn had been placed near the service door.
When she asked why, Vanessa smiled.
“You have easier access to the restroom.”
Several invited executives looked uncomfortable.
Vanessa raised her glass.
“To new ownership.”
Evelyn did not lift hers.
Vanessa noticed.
“This dinner matters to Daniel. You could pretend to be supportive for one evening.”
“I have been pretending for six weeks.”
Daniel whispered, “Mom.”
Vanessa leaned closer.
“Maybe gratitude is difficult when you’ve spent your whole life controlling people.”
Evelyn looked directly at her.
“You believe cruelty becomes intelligence when spoken quietly.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
The front gate camera announced that Richard’s car had arrived.
Vanessa saw the notification.
She needed Evelyn humbled before her father entered.

She reached for the gravy boat.
👉 With her parents only moments from the door, Vanessa chose one final act of humiliation—and gave Evelyn the opening she had been waiting for.
