Chapter 10 - The Dinner Becomes a Hearing
Richard did not hug Vanessa.
He walked directly into the dining room and placed the forged board consent beside her plate.
“Did you send this to my attorneys?”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“It came from Hale & Hearth.”
“That was not my question.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Richard, this is a misunderstanding.”
Michael opened his folder.
“Then explain nine hundred thousand dollars paid to VDH Strategy.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Brand consulting.”
“Performed by whom?”
“My team.”
“You have no employees under that company.”
Daniel reached for the papers.
Miriam closed the folder.
“Do not touch evidence.”
The invited executives began moving toward the exits.
Evelyn stopped them.
“You were invited to witness a family endorsement. You should also witness why it will not happen.”
Vanessa turned toward her mother.
“Mom, tell them this is ridiculous.”
Caroline stared at the gravy on Evelyn’s blouse.
“Did you spit at her?”
Vanessa’s silence answered.
Caroline looked devastated.
Daniel tried to regain control.
“Evelyn has been hostile to the investment from the beginning.”
Richard faced him.
“Because you offered collateral you don’t own.”
“I run the company.”
“You do not own the house.”
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“My mother allows us to live here.”
Vanessa looked at him with pure rage.
“You told me it would become ours.”
“I said eventually.”
Evelyn opened her thin folder.
“No, Daniel. You allowed her to invent that future because correcting her would have required honesty.”
She removed the deed.
The owner was the Evelyn Hale Residence Trust.
Vanessa read it.
“This can be changed.”
“Only by me.”
“You need us to maintain this place.”
“The trust pays maintenance.”
“You live here.”
“I returned after surgery to the house I own.”
Richard looked toward Daniel.
“You allowed my daughter to call your mother a dependent while asking me to invest against her property.”
Daniel’s face reddened.
“I thought Mom would sign.”
Miriam answered calmly.
“She did not. So someone copied her signature.”
Vanessa leaned back.
“Daniel handled the corporate documents.”
Daniel turned toward her.
“You gave them to your father’s legal team.”
Their united front began breaking.
Evelyn watched without satisfaction.
She had hoped shame might produce truth.
