Chapter 7 - The Audit Miriam Built
Miriam assembled a team quietly.
A forensic accountant traced every transfer involving Daniel, Vanessa, Westmere Advisory and Vela House.
A cybersecurity expert reviewed Claire’s compromised devices.
A private investigator documented Vanessa’s assets.
The results were worse than Claire expected.
Vanessa’s company was not merely failing.
It was operating like a collapsing pyramid.
New customer payments covered old refund demands.
Investors received false sales reports.
Products advertised online were bought cheaply from overseas manufacturers and relabeled as premium formulas.
Several customers had reported skin reactions.
Vanessa buried the complaints.
Daniel used Westmere Advisory to move money away from creditors.
He also transferred some of Claire’s joint income into accounts she could not see.
Miriam laid the evidence across a conference table.
“They are preparing for Vela House to collapse,” she said.
“And then?”
“Vanessa files bankruptcy. Daniel claims Westmere’s payments were legitimate consulting income. Your name appears on enough accounts that they may blame you for the missing funds.”
Claire felt cold.
“They’re making me part of it.”
“They already have.”
The false bank account connected Claire to Vela House.
The trust withdrawal made it appear that she invested personally.
Several internal emails described Claire as the company’s “silent financial partner.”
Daniel had written them.
Claire asked, “Why would he do that?”
“To protect his sister and himself.”
Miriam pointed to a draft agreement recovered from Daniel’s cloud storage.
It granted Vanessa full access to a new eighteen-million-dollar investment account.
The account would be opened using money from Claire’s trust.
Daniel intended to pressure Claire into authorizing it.
Once she signed, Vanessa would claim all earlier transfers were approved.
If Vela House failed, Claire would carry much of the legal exposure.
Miriam recommended freezing the trust immediately.
Claire authorized enhanced security but stopped short of a complete freeze.
Daniel would notice.
She needed enough time to collect direct evidence of coercion.
“You don’t need to let them hurt you to prove fraud,” Miriam warned.
“I know.”
“Then why wait?”
Claire looked at the draft agreement.
“Because Daniel will say Vanessa manipulated him. I need to know whether he is choosing this with full knowledge.”
Miriam’s expression softened with sadness.
“You already know.”
Claire did.
But part of her still wanted to see whether Daniel would stop before destroying everything.
Miriam gave her a secure recording application disguised as a medical file uploader.
Every photograph and audio clip would automatically transfer to the legal office.
They agreed on a command.
