Chapter 14 - The Apartment Door

Claire returned from a medical appointment and noticed the door was not fully closed.
She did not enter.
Miriam had taught her to trust any detail that felt wrong.
Claire stepped back into the hallway and called police.
Officers found Daniel inside.
He stood beside an open desk drawer holding a small storage drive.
The drive was a decoy.
The real audit files remained inside Miriam’s office.
Daniel claimed he had a right to enter because some furniture had come from the marital home.
The apartment lease contained only Claire’s name.
The protective order prohibited him from approaching her residence.
Security footage showed Daniel using a stolen access card.
Police arrested him again.
Inside his pocket, officers found a handwritten list.
DELETE MEDICAL UPLOAD.
REMOVE KITCHEN BACKUP.
FIND MIRIAM FILE.
Daniel had not come for furniture.
He came to destroy evidence.
Claire watched the arrest footage later.
The man searching her apartment looked nothing like the husband who once sat beside her during treatments and promised they would face every disappointment together.
She finally stopped asking which version was real.
Both were.
The caring moments had existed.
So had the choices he made afterward.
Love did not cancel intent.
Daniel’s bail was revoked.
From custody, he offered prosecutors information about Vanessa’s offshore accounts.
He claimed she manipulated him by threatening to expose his financial problems.
Investigators showed him the payments he received.
Daniel admitted taking money but denied knowing about the unsafe products.
Vanessa learned of his cooperation and released private messages describing Daniel as the architect of the trust theft.
One read:
Claire will never report us. She’s too desperate to keep the marriage.
Another said:
If she refuses the card, I’ll make sure she has nowhere to come home to.
The siblings had each preserved evidence against the other.
Neither had preserved loyalty.
The financial-crime case expanded.
Daniel faced identity theft, wire fraud, conspiracy, unauthorized computer access and witness tampering in addition to the assault charge.
Vanessa faced fraud, identity theft, unsafe product distribution and investor deception.
Claire filed for divorce.
Daniel’s attorney demanded half the growth of her trust during the marriage.
Miriam answered with the trust agreement.
Every asset remained separate.
Daniel had no right to it.
The only property he could claim was part of the marital house.
Then the title search revealed another secret.

Claire’s mother had paid the entire down payment through a protected loan Daniel never repaid.
👉 Daniel believed the house was his final bargaining weapon, but Margaret’s carefully written agreement ensured Claire could take it back without rewarding the man who burned her.
