Chapter 16 - The Morning Claire Stopped Begging
Claire testified first in the assault case.
The discoloration on her cheek had faded but remained visible beneath the courtroom lights.
Daniel sat at the defense table.
He did not look at her until the prosecutor asked about breakfast.
Claire explained the black card.
The authorization form.
The audit.
The years of unauthorized transfers.
“What did you tell Mr. Daniel immediately before he threw the coffee?” the prosecutor asked.
“That I was leaving.”
“Had you threatened him?”
“No.”
“Had you touched him?”
“No.”
“Why do you believe he became violent?”
Claire looked toward Daniel.
“Because he realized I was no longer negotiating for permission.”
The prosecutor played the video captured by Claire’s secure application.
Daniel stood.
Claire said she was leaving.
He demanded the card.
Then came the coffee.
Daniel’s attorney suggested the liquid struck Claire accidentally during a struggle.
Claire remained calm.
“There was no struggle.”
“You were holding a card Mr. Daniel believed belonged to the marriage.”
“It was connected to my protected trust.”
“He reached for it.”
“He threw coffee before reaching for anything.”
The attorney displayed messages in which Claire told Miriam to prepare legal action.
“You entered breakfast intending to provoke evidence.”
“I entered knowing there might be danger.”
“You replaced the bank card with a monitored card.”
“Yes.”
“You deceived your husband.”
“I prevented him from stealing eighteen million dollars.”
“Were you hoping he would become angry?”
Claire stared at the attorney.
“I was hoping the man I married would stop.”
The courtroom became silent.
The attorney asked why she had not reported the earlier financial theft immediately.
Claire answered honestly.
“I loved him. I was ashamed. I kept believing one more conversation would bring back the person I trusted.”
“Did staying mean you approved the transfers?”
“No.”
“Did remaining married mean you gave consent?”
“No.”
“Did attending breakfast mean you accepted the risk?”
Claire looked toward the jury.
“Going into my own kitchen did not give my husband permission to burn me.”
The prosecutor later presented Daniel’s notes from Claire’s apartment.
DELETE MEDICAL UPLOAD.
REMOVE KITCHEN BACKUP.
FIND MIRIAM FILE.
His attempt to destroy evidence supported Claire’s account.
Daniel’s defense weakened further when Vanessa agreed to testify against him.
But her testimony came at a cost.
