Chapter 5 - The Trust Withdrawal
Claire had never given Daniel access to the trust.
The money was managed by independent trustees.
Every significant withdrawal required Claire’s approval through two-factor authentication.
Yet fifty thousand dollars had left the account.
The request appeared to come from Claire’s personal email.
A verification code had been approved from her phone.
Miriam traced the date.
Claire had been undergoing a medical procedure that morning.
Daniel held her phone while she was sedated.
He had told nurses he needed it to update her family.
Instead, he approved the withdrawal.
The money entered a Vela House account.
Claire felt physically ill.
She remembered waking in the recovery room.
Daniel sat beside her holding her hand.
He told her how frightened he had been.
He kissed her forehead.
At the same time, money stolen from her mother’s trust was moving toward his sister.
Miriam recommended immediate legal action.
Claire hesitated.
“If I report it now, Daniel may go to prison.”
“He committed financial fraud while you were unconscious.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Claire looked away.
She knew the facts.
Accepting what they meant was harder.
She returned home and asked Daniel directly.
“Did you take money from my trust while I was in surgery?”
He denied it immediately.
Claire showed him the login records.
His denial changed.
“You told me we could use trust money for emergencies.”
“Vanessa’s company is not our emergency.”
“I planned to replace it.”
“You took my phone while I was sedated.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Do you understand how that sounds?”
“Yes.”
“No. You are trying to make me look like a criminal because I helped my sister.”
“You are a criminal if you steal from someone who cannot consent.”
His face hardened.
“Do not speak to me that way.”
Claire stood.
“Return the money.”
“It’s gone.”
“Then tell Vanessa to sell something.”
“You want her homeless?”
“She owns a guesthouse, three cars and enough jewelry to repay us twice.”
Daniel moved between Claire and the door.
“You will not involve lawyers.”
Claire looked at him.
It was the first time he had blocked her exit.
“Move.”
“Promise me.”
“No.”
He remained there several seconds longer.
Then he stepped aside.
Claire passed him without showing fear.
But her hands shook when she reached the bedroom.
She messaged Miriam.
Prepare everything. I may need to leave quickly.
Miriam replied:
May you like
I already have.
👉 Daniel had crossed from deception into physical intimidation, but Vanessa soon discovered the one thing Claire feared enough to make her hesitate again.
