Chapter 12 - The Husband Who Took His Share
Daniel received monthly payments from Vela International Licensing.
The transfers began seven months earlier.
They were labeled management fees.
Daniel had never performed legitimate work for Vela House.
Instead, he received ten percent of every amount Vanessa moved away from creditors.
His share paid for private club memberships, gambling trips and a downtown apartment Claire did not know existed.
Miriam showed Claire the records inside a medical clinic where her burns were being treated.
The coffee had caused painful first- and superficial second-degree burns along her cheek and neck.
Doctors expected healing, but some discoloration might remain for months.
Claire read Daniel’s offshore payments silently.
“He wasn’t saving Vanessa,” she said.
“No,” Miriam answered. “He was investing in the theft.”
The downtown apartment produced another discovery.
Its building records showed Daniel visited several nights each month.
Claire initially feared an affair.
The truth was different but no less painful.
Daniel and Vanessa used the apartment as a financial office.
They stored Vela House documents there.
They also discussed how to pressure Claire.
Police recovered handwritten plans.
One page listed Claire’s vulnerabilities.
Fertility treatment.
Fear of divorce.
Concern about family embarrassment.
Attachment to the house.
Desire to protect Daniel from prosecution.
Beside each item was a strategy.
Use baby issue if she resists.
Threaten separation.

Remind her we are her only family.
Claire stared at the list.
“They studied me.”
“They weaponized what you trusted them with,” Miriam said.
Another note described the breakfast plan.
If she gives card, complete transfer immediately.
If she refuses, Daniel forces exit and files abandonment claim.
Daniel intended to remove Claire from the house, then argue that she left voluntarily and should receive a smaller share in the divorce.
Vanessa had prepared photographs of Claire’s packed bags.
They planned to claim she had been preparing to disappear for months.
Fortunately, Miriam had documented Claire’s safety plan and temporary housing arrangement before breakfast.
The abandonment story failed before it began.
Daniel was released on bail with a no-contact order.
He moved into the downtown apartment.
Vanessa remained in the guesthouse until a court ordered her to leave.
She responded by telling friends Claire had staged the burn to steal Daniel’s company.
