Chapter 6 - The Secret Vanessa Used
Claire and Daniel had been trying to have a baby for nearly two years.
They kept the fertility treatments private.
Only Vanessa knew.
Claire had shared the details during a moment when she still considered Vanessa family.
She told her about the injections.
The failed procedures.
The fear that Daniel might eventually resent her.
Vanessa stored every vulnerability.
After the trust confrontation, she entered Claire’s bedroom carrying tea.
“I know things have become ugly,” she said.
Claire did not take the cup.
“Return the trust money.”
“I can’t.”
“Then sell your car.”
“The car is leased.”
“The jewelry?”
“Collateral.”
“For what?”
Vanessa ignored the question.
She sat on the edge of a chair.
“Daniel is under enormous pressure.”
“He stole from me.”
“He was trying to help his family.”
“I am his family.”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“You’re his wife. That isn’t always permanent.”
Claire looked at her.
Vanessa continued.
“He wants children.”
“We both do.”
“He told me the treatments are exhausting him.”
Claire knew Daniel had expressed sadness.
He had never told her he wanted to leave.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“If you call the police over money, he will divorce you. You’ll lose the marriage, and everyone will know why.”
“Know what?”
“That you couldn’t give him a family, so you tried to destroy the one he already had.”
The cruelty was carefully aimed.
Claire’s eyes filled despite her effort to remain calm.
Vanessa stood.
“Close the audit. Let Daniel manage the money. We can all move forward.”
Claire understood the offer.
Silence in exchange for the marriage.
She hated herself for considering it.
That night, Daniel returned to their bedroom for the first time in weeks.
He held her and cried.
He said Vanessa had misunderstood him.
He promised the affair between them was only financial.
He swore he still wanted a child with Claire.
For several days, the old version of their marriage seemed to return.
Daniel attended a fertility appointment.
He cooked dinner.
He apologized for blocking the door.
Then Claire discovered an email from Vanessa to Daniel.
She’ll cooperate if she thinks you still want the baby.
Daniel replied:
I know how to handle my wife.
Claire read the sentence until the words lost shape.
She did not confront him.
She forwarded the email to Miriam.
