Chapter 2 - The Sister Who Needed Saving

Vanessa moved into Claire and Daniel’s guesthouse after her luxury wellness company began collapsing.

She described the move as temporary.

“I only need three weeks,” she said.

Claire gave her six months.

Vanessa had launched Vela House as an exclusive health and beauty brand for wealthy clients. The company sold expensive skincare, private retreats and membership packages.

Its social media looked successful.

The accounts told a different story.

Vanessa spent investor money on vacations, designer clothes and parties disguised as promotional events.

Several products had never reached production.

Customers were demanding refunds.

Daniel knew only part of the truth.

He believed Vanessa needed short-term help because a distributor had failed.

“She’s my sister,” he told Claire. “We can’t let her lose everything.”

Claire sympathized.

She had once been close to Vanessa.

During the first year of Claire and Daniel’s marriage, Vanessa called her the sister she never had. They went shopping, shared holidays and spoke late into the night.

That changed when Vanessa learned Claire had inherited money.

Claire’s mother, Margaret Ellis, had been a cautious investor who lived simply despite building a significant portfolio.

When Margaret died, Claire inherited a protected investment trust.

Claire never discussed the amount.

She continued working as a hospital administrator and drove the same car she had owned for years.

Daniel knew the trust existed, but he believed it contained only two or three million dollars.

Claire had never corrected him.

Not because she wanted to deceive him.

Because Margaret had taught her something important.

“Money shows you who people become when they believe they deserve your choices.”

The trust was separate property.

Daniel had no legal control over it.

Still, Claire helped his family whenever she felt comfortable.

She paid for Daniel’s father’s heart surgery when insurance delayed approval.

She helped Vanessa secure her first legitimate business loan.

She never demanded repayment from the family.

Vanessa gradually began treating generosity as an obligation.

The first request after moving in was for two hundred thousand dollars.

“I can repay you after the holiday launch,” she promised.

Claire asked to see the company’s financial records.

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

“You don’t trust me?”

“I don’t invest without reviewing the business.”

Daniel became defensive.

“She isn’t some stranger asking for money.”

“That makes reviewing it more important, not less.”

At dinner that evening, Vanessa cried.

Daniel accused Claire of humiliating her.

Claire held her ground.
